BELLVILLE: William James Hayes, 80, of Bellville, Ohio went home Friday to be with his Lord. He died at home on September 13, 2013 surrounded by his wife and family.

He was born January 28th 1933 in Mansfield, the oldest son of Orrville Hayes Sr. and Genevieve (Rachel) Hayes. He graduated from Mansfield Senior High where he was a member of the track team. He joined the Air Force in 1952 and served as a Radar Technician on the Pine Tree line in Canada. After completing his military service he attended Ohio State University on the GI bill. He married Mary (Goodnight) on June 14, 1958 at Pleasant Valley Lutheran Church in Lucas, Ohio.

He worked for General Motors in welder maintenance for 28 years, retiring in 1991. His love of gardening lead him to become a Master Gardener. He was a member of the Men’s Garden Club working tirelessly for years on the Mum Show and Fall Harvest Show. He volunteered at Malabar Farm , the Carrousel and the Third Street Clinic in support of garden spaces for people to enjoy. He was also a member of the Chrysanthemum Society of Central Ohio and the National Chrysanthemum Society. As much as a he loved to grow a near perfect mum, he was happiest when his gardens produced an abundance of vegetables. His garden was successful when he could share it with friends, family, neighbors and the kitchen of Wednesday noon lunch.

Bill was a long time member of First English Lutheran Church. He served as a greeter and communion preparer as well as on many work projects for the Property committee. He was always available to offer his help to anyone in any way that he could. A man of few words; he shared his faith most vividly by how he chose to live. Whether you knew him as the man in his garden, the greeter at church, the guy who worked his shift at work, husband, father or grandfather; he was a man of firm faith, quiet strength and integrity.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years Mary (Goodnight) Hayes, two daughters, Deborah Brandt (Robert) and Laura Cole (Jeffrey),five grandchildren, Laura Blankenship, Zack Cole (Larissa), Jevan Cole, Rachel Schultz (Jeffrey), and Kaity Mabry (Caleb) and two great-grandchildren Christopher and Lilly Blankenship. He is also survived by his sister Helen O’Connell, sister-in-law Jacqueline Hayes, brother-in-law Jim Goodnight and sister-in-law Ruth Spayde as well as many nieces and nephews.

Private funeral services will be held for his family in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home, officiated by the Reverend Doug Pretorius, pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Bellville. Interment with military honors by American Legion Post #535 will be at Oak Grove Memorial Park, Mansfield, Ohio.
