William Harold Spurgeon

December 30, 1941 ‒ January 15, 2020

Mount Vernon, Ohio

William Harold Spurgeon, “Papah”, born to Leroy and Mary Helen (Ogle) Spurgeon in Servierville, Tennessee, on December 30, 1941, passed away on Wednesday January 15, 2020 on his family farm, in Mount Vernon Ohio surrounded by his family. He was 78 years old.  Harold proudly served in the United States Navy from 1958 to 1960.

Harold, “Papah” is survived by his spitfire wife of 57 years Susan Spurgeon; his children Jodi (Mike) Cole and Joe (Terri) Spurgeon; and his six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren Nikki (Aaron) Alfrey, Mason and Piper Alfrey; Kami (Cale) Coe, Bryson Rosario, Kayden Coe; Courtney (Teddy Hagans) Cole, Scarlett Hagans; Ashton Spurgeon, Aspen Spurgeon; Alanta Spurgeon; and Colton Spurgeon.  Besides his parents “Papah” was preceded in death by his great-grandson Barrett Hagans in 2017.

Harold led a fulfilling life of electrician work, farm life, and in constant support of his 13 grandchildren and great grandchildren sports activities. When Harold, better known as “Papah” by family and friends, was not at the farm tending hay, cutting wood, or enjoying his farm animals, he could be found at some sort of sport arena watching their chosen game. He could always be heard above all the crowd with a resounding “ALRIGHT!” or “WAY TO GO ____!” *insert grandchild or great grandchild name here*. He was their number one sports fan, and would always make time to see them play, even in his last days making an effort to find out and acknowledge the kids and their sports. His support and love will be sorely missed at the many different sports fields.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Joe’s home in Mount Vernon on January 25th, 2020 at 12 noon. Those wishing to attend can contact Nikki Alfrey or Kami Coe. We will say good-bye and remember a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Knox County.
