William H. Schoonyan

May 11, 1941 ‒ July 21, 2018

Bellville, Ohio

The definition of a proud American steelworker and family farmer is William H. Schoonyan. He loved his family, farm, friends, animals, and tractor (in that order). Bill Schoonyan, peacefully passed away Saturday, July 21, 2018 in his Bellville home surrounded by family. He was 77.

Bill was born May 11, 1941 in Mansfield to parents Frank J. & Mary (Hardgrove) Schoonyan and graduated from Mansfield Senior High with the class of 1959. A beautiful young lady named M. Sue Sutherland caught his eye and the pair married on October 10, 1959.

Bill worked as an electrician and steelworker with ARMCO Steel for many years, but his true passion was the farm. Bill encouraged his grandkids to never stop learning, because, “if you don’t learn something—that’s a day lost.” He was a fantastic storyteller and loved sharing his family history.

In younger years, Bill enjoyed the peacefulness of deer hunting and fishing. Recently, he loved watching the hummingbirds and sitting on his porch listening to the hum of the countryside. He liked watching NASCAR races and spoiling his cats. But above all, Bill cherished spending time with his kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids.

He is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law Sandy & Tom Pfeifer of Bellville, Sherry & Jim McFerren of Bellville, and Shelley Meyer & Kenny Wilson of Lucas; grandchildren Michael & Tammy McFerren, Rob & Christina Pfeifer, Daniel & Megan McFerren, Ryan & Jilyssa Pfeifer, Ariel & Josh McLaughlin, and Megan & Cody Lusk; great-grandchildren Austin, Ethan, Logan, & Landon McFerren, Hunter McLaughlin, Ryker Lusk, and Jadelynn & Keira Pfeifer; cousins Marcella Schoonyan & family, and Eddie & Bonnie Wilson; sisters-in-law Kay Adams, Mary Sutherland, and Dot Vaughn-Sutherland & their families; along with special friends Lloyd Owens, Pastor Glenn Phillips, Gary Hess, and Dewey Stevens.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his loving wife of 37 years, Sue Schoonyan; cousin Jack Schoonyan; brothers-in-law Ed Sutherland, Leroy Adams, and Larry Sutherland; grandmother Opie Saeger; and good friend Shelby Neal.

His family will receive friends Wednesday, July 25, 2018 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home. A funeral service honoring Bill’s life will be held 11a.m. Thursday. Pastor Glenn Phillips will speak and burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park. Contributions in his memory to Hilltop Community Church may be made at the funeral home.
