William G. Burke

February 14, 1947 ‒ October 16, 2019

Mount Gilead, Ohio

William Gordon Burke, age 72, of Mount Gilead, passed away Wednesday, October 16, 2019, at Grant Medical Center following a brief illness.

He was born on February 14, 1947, in Pike County, KY, to the late Joseph and Suzie (Tackett) Burke. Gordon as his family and close friends addressed him and Bill as he was known in Ohio, graduated in 1966 from Virgie High School.

Bill dedicated 27 and a half years to General Motors in Mansfield. He was employed there as a journeyman machine repairman and finished his career there as a maintenance dispatcher.

On June 18, 1966, Gordon married his first wife: Lucille (Lucy) B. Little whom preceded him in death in 1989. Finding a second chance for love, Bill married Jane R. Smotherman on November 24, 1991.

A man of faith, Bill enjoyed attending Fresh Faith Community Church and played an integral role in helping construct the church.  Being a man of many talents, he gutted and rebuilt 2 old farmhouses and following his retirement from General Motors, built a large cabin in eastern Kentucky in the hollow he grew up in as a child.  As the years passed, he found comfort in heading to Frost Proof, Florida in the winters with Jane and spending time with their snowbird friends.  Known as always active and busy, he took great pride in tending his flowers, garden and bird feeders or helping a friend make a home repair.  There weren’t too many things he couldn’t fix. Gordon was known for his fashion statements which usually included a Hawaiian shirt, shorts and a pair of his comfy crocs. Gordon took great pride and joy in spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandkids and great grandkids. Gordon will be remembered for being a ham and loved posing for photos for his family.

He will be dearly missed by his wife, Jane; children: Larry Burke (Allison Bookless) of Delaware, Tina (Rick) Clemons of Bucyrus, and Heather (Greg) Pfleiderer of Mount Gilead; grandchildren: Amanda, Kandice, Bryce, Greg, Macee, Lauren, Brady, Erin, and Hayden; great grandchildren: Madisyn, Braedyn, Brennan, Steven, Ethan, Sophia, and Blayne; a brother, Gary Burke of Virgie, KY; a sister, Inez Hampton of Virgie, KY; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Gordon (Bill) was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Lucille; sister, Rena Loyless; and brother Ernest Bill Burke Sr.

His family will greet friends from 4 to 7 PM on Monday, October 21, 2019, at the Snyder Funeral Homes, Craven Chapel. (67 N. Main St., Mount Gilead, OH 43338) A service to celebrate his life will be held there on Tuesday, October 22, 2019, at 10:30 AM, with Pastor T.J. McNew III. Burial will follow in Iberia Cemetery.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Fresh Faith Community Church.
