William D. Woods

April 05, 1955 ‒ June 20, 2020

Columbus, Ohio

William D. Woods, age 65, passed away at Grant Hospital on Saturday, June 20, 2020 after an extended illness.

William, known as Bill, (Billy to family), was born on April 5, 1955 in Columbus, Ohio to the late William J. and Marcia A. (McBane) Woods.

Graduate of Eastmoor High School.

Bill recently retired from McDonald’s in Johnstown where he was a Grill Cook.  He was a kind and gentle soul. He was quiet, preferring to sit in the background, with a smile, and watch his family enjoy holidays and gatherings, but if you were one-on-one, he also loved a good conversation. He always enjoyed laughing and finding the humor in everyday situations. He enjoyed listening to all sorts of “oldies” music and was the one that introduced his young nephews and nieces to classics like the Smothers Brothers and Herman’s Hermits. He always found the most unique toys and gifts for family members at Christmas. He loved to garden and could be found continually purchasing plants and flowers to set out in the spring. He had a beloved cat of nearly 17 years, Pickles, that brought a lot of love and joy to his life. Bill could fix any vehicle or electronic item and enjoyed tinkering with them on a regular basis. He was also an amazing chef that loved to cook.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by two sisters, Christine L. Woods of Martinsburg, OH and Connie S. Cottrill of Delaware, OH.  Bill is survived by his sister, Bonnie J. (Salvatore) Cautela of Gahanna; nieces, Alicia (fiancé Michael Kimmle) Cautela of Gahanna, Brandy (Richard) Smith of Utica, Danielle (Roman) Kravec of Westerville, Leah (Matthew) Cottrill-Mescher of Bentonville, AR and Andrea (Gordon Hicinbothem) Cottrill of San Jose, CA; one nephew, Keith Cottrill of Delaware, OH; two great nieces, Torree (Devin) Cobern of Bradenton, FL, and Genia Kravec of Westerville, OH; three great nephews, Kody Smith of Newark, OH, Jacob Kravec of Westerville, OH and Connor Cottrill of Delaware, OH; and one great-great nephew, Liam Cobern of Bradenton, FL; three aunts, Kaylinn Thompson of Westerville, Mary Kidd of Indiana and Shirley (Jerry) Radcliff of Newark, OH; brother-in-law, Richard (Debra) Cottrill of Delaware, OH  and numerous cousins.

  • My heart goes out to Bill and his family, I worked with Bill for a couple of years at Johnstown McDonalds and he was my favorite coworker. I’d check on him everyday we worked together and make sure he was doin alright, as he’d do the same for me. On my last day there he gave me a mermaid ring holder and a sweet note that I will never forget.

  • Our deepest sympathy to the family of William Woods. Bill was definitely a quiet guy, but had a way to make you chuckle. We have missed his presence at McDonlads, but you can bet his name will bring a smile to everyone’s face when mentioned. Rest In Peace Bill
