William D. Ploughe, age 82 of Delaware, OH longtime physics professor of The Ohio State University passed away Friday, September 09, 2011 at Grady Memorial Hospital with his wife by his side.

William (Bill) was born on March 30, 1929 in Fort Wayne, IN to the late Milroy W. and Emily M. (Risser) Ploughe. He graduated from Elmhurst High School in Fort Wayne in 1947; in 1951 he received a bachelor’s degree in education, and in 1953 a masters degree in physics from Indiana University. In 1961 he completed his doctorate in experimental nuclear physics at Purdue University.

Dr. Ploughe was a professor of physics at The Ohio State University from 1962 until his retirement in 1992. With the exception of two years at the US Atomic Energy Commission from 1966 till 1968, he taught elementary physics to life science and engineering students. He also worked with the high school teachers program. Following retirement he continued as a faculty emeritus. A true teacher, he was gifted with the ability to bring difficult topics to a level that his students could understand.

He was a member of the Ohio State Retirees Association, the American Physical Society, and the Ohio Academy of Science. He was also a longtime member of the American Association of Physics Teachers and from which he received the Distinguished Service Citation in 2002.

A lifelong Boy Scout he served in many capacities throughout his life. He served as a member of the District Committee of the local BSA Council. For a number of years he taught canoeing and was the Canoe Clinic coordinator for the Council. He was Cub Master of Pack 333, on the troop committees and served as the institutional representative of Troops 65 and 365 for Worthington United Methodist Church. During his youth he was active in Troops in Indiana. In 1983 he was presented the Silver Beaver award by the former Central Ohio Council.

He lived in Worthington for almost 50 years, until he moved to Delaware in 2010. Bill was an active member of Worthington United Methodist Church and the Worthington Optimist Club. Recent winters were spent in Venice, Florida, where he served on the board of directors for Venice Isles Estates.

He was also known as a handyman and an avid woodworker who was not afraid to dabble in anything. Detailed and thorough, he was always willing to lend a helping hand. He was happiest exploring new things, especially outdoors.

Simply put in Bill’s words; “I have lived a good life”.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 59 years: Nancy Jane (Beaman) whom he married on August 31, 1952, sons: Richard (Sharon) Ploughe of Raleigh, NC, Steven (Susan) Ploughe of Lake Zurich, IL, daughter: Jane (Steve) Onspaugh of New Albany, OH, 3 Grandchildren, Brothers: Clyde (Janet) of Lafayette, IN, Roger (Norma) of Fort Wayne, IN.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held 4:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Worthington United Methodist Church where friends may call from 2-4 prior to the services. Arrangements entrusted to the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home in Delaware.
