Wheeler R. Callihan, age 87, of Mount Vernon, died Wednesday April 3, 2002 at the Ohio State University Hospital in Columbus following a short illness. Wheeler was born February 20, 1915 in Toledo to Ralph W. and Marie K. (Ferrenburg) Callihan and moved to Mount Vernon 1948. He served as 1st Sargent with the 3128 Signal Service Company of the Army Signal Corps during World War Two. Wheeler retired in 1979 from the Marathon Oil Company where he had been employed 33 years as a service manager.
He was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Mount Vernon, Mount Zion Lodge #9 Free and Accepted Masons in Mount Vernon and was a former member of the Mount Vernon Kiwanis Club.
Surviving are his wife Helen (Wichman) Callihan whom he married September 24, 1938, two sons Dr. Thomas R. (Gloria) Callihan MD of Memphis, Tenn., and Douglass E. (Debra) Callihan of Roanoke, Virginia; 3 grandchildren Elisabeth Callihan, Patrick Callihan, and Katie Callihan; a stepson Eric Menendez and his sister Scottie (Kenneth) Young of Saginaw, Michigan.
Friends may call Friday from 5 to 7 PM at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. Funeral services will be Saturday at 9:30 AM at the Faith Lutheran Church with Rev. Mark Wildermuth officiating. Burial will be in Mound View Cemetery.
