Wathena Ann Carroll

December 24, 1921 ‒ November 04, 2007

Covington and Bellville, Ohio

BELLVILLE: Wathena Ann Carroll, 85, of Renie Road, Bellville, and formerly of Covington and Piqua, died Sunday evening November 4, 2007 in Country Meadow Care Center, Bellville.

She was born December 24, 1921 in Sidney to Gilbert and Freda (Marshall) Swank, and attended Sidney High School.

On September 28, 1940 she married Thomas A. Carroll, Sr. in Sidney and they moved to the Piqua area to raise their family.

A homemaker, Wathena was integral in the operation of their family farm. From putting out the crops, making hay, to harvest, Wathena drove the tractor, made parts runs for the equipment and fed the workers to ensure the venture ran smoothly.

Raising four children was no light task. She tended to a large garden, and canned and froze the harvest’s bounty to see her family through each winter.

Though she tended to the garden, she tended to her children even closer, never missing one of their sporting events or activities … lest it be spring planting or harvest, and serving as 4H advisor for years.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Covington and the Stillwater Grange of Covington, of which she held office.

She was a fifty-year member of the Ohio State Extension Homemakers (now FCE) and had held both local and state offices.

Wathena was a gifted needle worker with needlepoint, embroidery and canvas craft projects.

Blessed with the spiritual gift of “kindness,” she will be remembered for the quiet and unassuming way she volunteered to help others when needed, her leadership role in her community, and her deep love for her family.

Following Thomas, Sr.’s retirement, they moved from Piqua to Bellville in 1984. Wathena dedicated five years to the care of her husband as his health failed. He preceded her in death on March 28, 1992.

Wathena was a loving mom and grandma, and clearly one of the best cooks in Ohio: comfort food from a loving heart. Her hamburger-baked beans are a family favorite, but her fried chicken, mashed potatoes, noodles and gravy will never be duplicated.

She is survived by her children and their spouses Keytha and Bill Rouse of Piqua, Thomas, Jr. and Mary Carroll of Bellville, Gilbert and Jane Carroll of Mount Gilead, and Connie and Terry Updike of Huntington, Indiana; grandchildren Scott Wirrig of Columbus, Wayne Wirrig of Piqua, Patricia Fackler of Shelby, Ken Carroll of Bellville, Heather Turner of Indianapolis, Indiana, Lisa Updike of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Eli Carroll of Piqua and Cami Compton of Piqua; ten great grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law Lloyd and Jean Swank of Sidney.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson Chris Mackey; a brother Willis Swank; and a sister Betty Cruikshank.

The family will receive friends Thursday, November 8, 2007 from 11 AM – 1 PM in Pearson Jackson Funeral Home 10 South High Street, Covington, Ohio (45318), where the funeral service will be held Thursday at 1 PM. The Rev. Mel Zumbrum will officiate. Burial will follow in Miami Memorial Park Cemetery.

The Snyder Funeral Home, Bellville, is honored to serve the family.
