Walter Valjean Williams, Sr., 78, of Galion, died Tuesday, Apr. 20, 2010 at Olentangy Woods Nursing Center in Galion.

Born July 19, 1931 in Champaign, Ill., he was the son of the late Walter Z. and Opal Rhee BrownWilliams. He married Lola M. Larimore Williams on Sept. 28, 1952 and she survives.

Walter served with the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division stationed at Fort Bragg, N.C. during the Korean Conflict. He was a graduate of Olivet Nazarene College in Bourbonnais, Ill., an ordained Elder in the Church of the Nazarene and served as a Nazarene pastor in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Florida, moving to Galion in 1993 to be near his family. During his ministry he was involved in leading many church building projects and was the volunteer coordinator of the most recent building project of the Galion First Church of the Nazarene sanctuary, where he was a member. He enjoyed woodworking and in his later years built doll houses, clocks, quilt racks, book cases and cabinets. Walter also liked to travel and went on volunteer mission trips helping to build churches in Trinidad and Costa Rica and also volunteered helping to build Mt. Vernon Nazarene College at its founding. Described as a doting granddad, he will be remembered as one who liked to kid and tease, enjoying life and especially for his “million dollar smile”.

He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Walter V. Williams, Jr. and Lois Williams of Rockledge, Fla., Rev. Mike and Kenna Williams of Mt. Vernon and Ron and Cheryl Williams of Galion; seven grandchildren, Wendy Rob Armbruster, Kelly Williams, Ben Elliot Williams, Angela Williams, Amber Williams, Aaron Williams and Ryan Williams; three great-grandchildren, Carly, Taylor and Brooke Armbruster and three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Oval Williams of Bourbonnais, Ill., Dennis and Lana Williams of Bourbonnais, Ill. and Linus and Wendy Williams of Mt. Vernon, Ill.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lucian and Maurice Williams.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Apr. 23, and from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Apr. 24, at the Galion First Church of the Nazarene where funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Apr. 24, 2010 with Rev. Mike Williams and Dr. Rick McCartney officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery.

Full military graveside services will be held by the United States Army and the Galion/Crestline area veteran’s organizations.
