Walter M. Furbay, age 95, of the Brethren Home, New Oxford, Pa., and formerly of Cardington, went to be with the Lord on Monday January 25, 2016.
He was born in Cardington, Ohio May 27, 1920 and was a birthright Quaker. He received his BS from Ohio State University and was a High School teacher for several years. He served in the Navy in World War II as a Lt. JG and continued to serve in the Reserves and retired after 20 years of service. Following the war he went back to earn his MS and PhD from OSU. His doctoral thesis researched the viability of selling cut flowers and plants in grocery stores in 1960 before it was common. He worked for Campbell Soup Co. in Camden, NJ as the Agricultural Economist and then in Washington DC for the US Department of Agriculture. He taught Business and Economics at The Kings College in Briarcliff Manor, NY and travelled worldwide with The Christian Businessmen’s Assoc. on mission endeavors.
He is preceded in death by two wives: Margie (Beckwith) Furbay, and Camille (Stivers) Furbay. He is survived by two daughters: Rebecca Spalla and her husband Samuel T. Spalla and Virginia (Miles) Mortorff and her husband Leonard. Grandchildren: Jeffry Miles and wife Jennifer, Samuel V. Spalla and wife Melissa, and Claire (Spalla) Hornberger and husband William. Great grandchildren: Anne and Evan Miles and Taylor, Samuel J., and Jordyn Spalla. Sister, Esther Hudnell and brother, Harold Furbay.
The Furbay family will greet friends from 2 – 3 p.m. on Monday, February 1, 2016 at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mt. Gilead. Services celebrating his life will be held at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Greg Rice officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Union Cemetery in Cardington.
The family would like to express their deepest thanks for the love and care shown to Walter by so many dedicated people during his years living at the Brethren Home Community.
