Vera M. Hedges

Vera Mae Hedges (93) of Primrose Retirement Community of Marion and formerly of Hughes Road, Prospect, Ohio died Sunday October 17, 2010 at Grady Memorial Hospital in Delaware, Ohio.
She was born August 4, 1917 near Radnor to the late William and Ruby (Baumgartner) Griffiths. On Jan. 13, 1941 she married the late Ivan Hedges and they were together for nearly 63 years until his death Dec. 25, 2003. They became parents of two children, Mary Howald (Ron) and Bill Hedges (Karen). She graduated from Radnor High School in 1935 and from Bliss College in 1940. She worked in the Delaware County Auditor’s office under Earl French and Major Samson. She is survived by her children Mary and Bill and four granddaughters: Deb Davis, Kathryn Burtch, Nichelle Trigg, and Melissa Toth. Great grandchildren are Austin and Morgan Althouse, Ashley and Taylor Myers, Kody and Allie Burtch, Jack and Ben Trigg, Ivan Hedges and Gene Toth. Two sisters Mary Lou Fryman of Cocoa, Florida, Martha Howald of Jacksonville Florida, and a brother Lloyd Griffiths of Heathrow, Florida and a deceased brother Donald Griffiths formerly of Marion, Ohio and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was a member of the Radnor Baptist Church for 78 years. She taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She was Historian of the church and held many offices such as Benevolent Treasurer for 13 years. She helped and spent many hours making potato salad and coleslaw for ice cream socials at the church. She was also a member of the Missionary Society (Dorcas Circle), Prospect Senior Citizens, and Jolly Joysters and Space Coast Breakfast Club. She was a volunteer at Delaware Court Nursing home for many years providing them with tray favors etc.
She and her husband, Ivan enjoyed many years of travelling all over the world. Her joys were her family, crafts, golfing, fishing, crocheting, quilting and painting landscapes. She especially enjoyed being a part of the bell ringers at Primrose and putting on programs around the community. She liked baking pies of which her cherry and apple will be greatly missed as also her oatmeal cookies. Her mayonnaise cake was a special treat at birthdays.
Friends may call Friday 10/22/2010 from 4 – 7 pm at the Rodman Neeper Funeral Home, 1510 W. William St. in Delaware. Private graveside services will be observed for the family in Radnor Cemetery.
