Velma P. Fawcett, age 96, of Mount Vernon, died Tuesday February 6, 2007 at the Knox Community Hospital in Mount Vernon. Velma was born July 7, 1910 in Harrison Township, Knox County, to Loring D. and Lula (Petry) Horn and had spent her lifetime in Knox County. She was a 1928 graduate of Gambier High School and had worked for the Shelmar Corporation (Continental Can Company) in Mount Vernon during World War Two and later at the S S Kresge Company department store on Main Street in Mount Vernon.

Velma was a member of the Grove Church of Christ near Gambier. She was also a member of the Gambier Pythian Sisters, Howard Garden Club, Retired Senior Volunteer Program in Gambier and a past member of Harrison Grange. Velma’s hobbies included crocheting and knitting and working in her flower gardens, but her passion in life was her family.

She married Donald Fawcett October 20,1937 and he preceded her in death on May 17, 1984. Donald had been the manager of the Elephant Lumber Company in Mount Vernon.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law Richard and Janice Fawcett of Mount Vernon; her grandsons Craig Fawcett and Chad Fawcett; her sister Irene Fowler of Mount Vernon; nephews and niece James Laymon, Ron Laymon and Sharon Cox; and her cousins Marguerite Miller and Helen Harris. Besides her parents and husband an infant sister Doris Horn preceded her in death.

Friends may call Thursday from 3 PM to 5 PM at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. Funeral services will be Friday at 11 AM at the Grove Church of Christ with evangelist Jerold Tear officiating. Burial will follow at Union Grove Cemetery near Gambier.
