Thomas “Tom” Shelton Sargent passed away Tuesday, February 9, 2016 in St. Augustine, Florida after a long battle with cancer. He was 72.
Tom was born on March 29, 1943, in St. Albans, West Virginia. After he graduated from Butler High School with the class of 1961, he went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in education from Ashland University in 1966. While at the university he played football and golf.
Using his degree in education Tom went on to teach Social Studies and coach various high school sports for 45 years. His first love of football brought him to 43 years of head coaching for several football teams, including; Clear Fork High School in Ohio, Cooper City High School and Western High School in Florida and teams in North Carolina. After his many years of coaching football, Tom wrote a book called “Big Red” based on his experiences at Cooper City High School. He also loved the Ohio State Buckeyes.
He is survived his wife of 35 years Vicki Sargent; children Thomas Jr. (Tricia) of Sylva N.C., Nicholas of St. Augustine, FL., Jennifer (Tom) Chapman of Bellville, Laurie (Jack) DiPrima, and Craig (Marie) Sargent of Davie, FL.; grandchildren Jackson, Bentley, Brody, Keith, Brooke, Megan, Erica, Daniel, and Brandon; brothers Gary, Doug, and Jeff Sargent all of Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mildred and Kenneth Sargent; his father Hanson Doss, and brother Darryl Sargent.
A celebration of life will be held in Tom’s memory on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at 1 p.m. at the Impact Worship Center, 160 Woodruff Road, Mansfield, Ohio with his grandson, Pastor Keith Chapman officiating.
