Stephen L. Darling

July 17, 1949 ‒ August 02, 2013

Johnstown Formerly Sunbury, Ohio

Stephen L Darling, age 64 recently of Johnstown (formerly of Sunbury), went home to be the Lord Friday afternoon, August 2, 2013 at his residence following an extended illness.

He was born on July 17, 1949 in Columbus to the late Virgil J. and Lorazell (Yocum) Darling. He was a graduate of Plain Local High School (New Albany) Class of 1967 and was a retired Rural Carrier for the Galena/Sunbury Post Office with 26 years of service. When not working, you could find Steve hunting, turkey calling, guiding hunters or ministering at the Sunbury Church of the Nazarene. He was an active member of the Sunbury Church of the Nazarene, Wyandot Archers, Centerburg Conservation Club, Christian Bowhunters Association, Bill Glass Prison Ministries and Ohio Bowhunter’s Association. He also taught Hunter Safety Courses for ODNR for many years.

Steve had a passion for helping children. He provided many hours of fun for children in the field of archery, hunting and fishing: helping boys earn their Boy Scout badges, teaching archery lessons and taking groups of children fishing, teaching them to clean and cook the fish they had caught. Stephen also mentored at-risk youth and taught them bicycle repair at the Mt. Vernon City Schools Alternative Center.

An excellent and gifted saxophone and clarinet player, Stephen’s greatest joy was worshiping and praising God with the gifts he had been given. He shared his skills in many venues: playing in marching band, local orchestras, and at his local church in the Praise Team. He also had a beautiful baritone and bass voice and sang in the Big Walnut Singers, Big Walnut Community Choir and many cantatas and musicals.

He is survived by his wife, Darla (Littrell) Darling and they were married February 19, 1997 in Sunbury; daughters: Erin (Tom) Callahan of Westerville, Kari Darling of Baltimore, MD., Kristin Darling of Salt Lake City, UT.; stepson: Daniel Corban of Johnstown; brother: Herman (Sue) Darling of North Port, FL.; sister: Lori (David) Pearson of St. Paris, OH.
