Sonja M. Burgess, age 58, of Mount Gilead, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 16, 2020, surrounded by her family.

Sonja was born on December 29, 1961, in Columbus, Ohio, to Rudy R. Friece and Emily S. (Hubbard) Friece, both of whom preceded her in death.  She is survived by her sons, Brandon (Laura) Carpenter of Cardington and Adam Burgess of Marengo; a brother, Ken (Deb) Friece of South Vienna; and four grandchildren, Lexi Carpenter, Wyatt Carpenter, Mila Burgess, and Emma Burgess.

Sonja loved her grandchildren and spent quality time with them.  She is described by her family as a very giving person with a big heart – she always made herself available to help those who needed her.  Sonja also loved the outdoors and camping.

Friends may call Tuesday, September 22, 4-6 p.m. at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, SR 3 at 61, Sunbury, where a funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 23, at 11 a.m.  Pastor John Carpenter will officiate and interment will follow in Green Mound Cemetery in Kilbourne.

Memorial contributions in Sonja’s name may be considered to the Burgess family.

  • Sonja and I grew up together in kilbourne. She was the sweetest person you could ever ask for. Give you the clothes right off her back if she thought you needed them. She was always so friendly to everyone and she was always so happy to see an old friend! I’m going to miss her sweet smile and her quirky sense of humor. I love you girlfriend! Don’t cry for our loss, rejoice in her reunion with her parents! She is in no pain and so happy now! She is our special angel!!!

  • Sonya, you were always so “Sweet” to me whenever I saw you and you always carried a “Smile” on your face!   • I’m so sorry to hear of this. Sonja was a very special lady that would do anything for anyone. I worked with her and we became friends. She had a special glow inside and out and it made you feel good when she was around you. Sonja was a beauitful lady now she is in no more pain and in the heavenly father arms free walking the streets of gold. The family is in my thoughts and prayers.
