Shirley J. Vachon

September 23, 1934 ‒ December 10, 2018

Delaware, Ohio

Shirley Jean Vachon, age 84 of Delaware, died peacefully on Monday December 10, 2018 in Worthington, OH with Heartland Hospice.

She was born on September 23, 1934 in Elkhart, IN to the late Dale Fremont Sr. and Ebba Evelyn (Erickson) Longacre. When she was a young girl, her family moved to Benton Harbor, MI.  There, she spent many of her days on the shores of Lake Michigan; she loved the lake and the St. Joseph light house. It was while playing on the beach that she met a handsome life guard who became the love of her life, Loren Joseph Vachon. They were happily married for 56 years.

Shirley graduated from Benton Harbor High School in 1953 and attended Lake Shore Junior College. Her life’s work was lovingly caring for her husband and 3 children, and her little poodles.

She leaves a legacy of love for her family as a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.  She will be remembered for her lessons on how to live a good life; finding purpose in family, home and church, and joy in the simple things (such as her homemade Christmas cookies, which will be especially missed in the coming weeks).

She was a devout and lifelong member of the Lutheran Church, most recently St. Mark’s Church in Delaware.

Those left to cherish her memory include children Robin (Robert) Vachon-Kraut of Columbus, Mark (Lisa) Vachon of Columbus, Lisa (Scott) Early of Delaware, 7 grandchildren Ian (Lindsay) Kraut and Emily Kraut, Lindsay and Matthieu Vachon, Rian and Aron Early, Josh (Tabbi) Early, great grandchildren Levi James Kraut and Mila June Kraut, sisters Marlene (Richard) Shalon, Sandi (Michael), Hettig, and Diane Ruth of St. Joe, MI. Brother Dale (Kay), Galien MI, Laurie (Rod) Mayes and many nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband Loren Joseph Vachon, sister Joanne McGrath, brothers David and Roger Longacre.

Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Snyder-Rodman Funeral Center, 101 Valleyside Dr. at W. William St., Delaware, Ohio 43015. Graveside services will be observed privately by her family on Saturday at Oak Grove Cemetery with Rev. Jennell Rue officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 28 E. William St., Delaware, Ohio 43015.

  • Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. The world lost a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister & Aunt today, but heaven gained a remarkable angel.

  • To Robin, Mark and Lisa, Your mother will always have a special place in my life as did your dad. I spent half of my young life at your house and the memories are deeply seated in my bones. Your mother’s quite nature and total devotion to her family was something to admire. She has patiently waited to once again sit side by side with your dad, and I know their souls are rejoicing to be together again. Grief is the price we pay for love, hopefully you can be comforted to know and believe that your mother’s grief has ended, and she is where she waited to tirelessly to be. Wishing you all my heartfelt sympathy and empathy for the days ahead.

  • I’m so sorry to read of your mom’s leaving this world. I know she’s with Uncle Loren and is ecstatic in heaven. You’ll miss her your whole life but she’s with Grandma and praying with her.

  • Lisa, we are keeping all of you in our thoughts and prayers. We are so sorry for your lost. We love you
