Shirley J. “Ma” Parmer, age 79, of Mount Vernon, Ohio, passed away on Monday, January 22, 2018 at Knox Community Hospital. She was born on August 27, 1938 in Cedar Bluff, Virginia the daughter of Timothy and Lula Mae (Brewster) Hankins. Shirley previously worked for Ranco in Delaware and retired from the B&R Cardinal Market in Marengo.

Shirley was a member of The Red Hat Society of Florida and attended the Columbus Business School before graduating from Mount Vernon Business School. Shirley attended the Willow Grove Advent Christian Church. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend that will be missed by many.

She is survived by her husband Kay Parmer whom she married on August 3, 1957; two daughters, Valerie (Bill) Smith of Fredericktown and Yvonne (Roger) McDonald of Mount Vernon; a son, Kelly Parmer of Dallas, Texas; four grandchildren, Melissa (Steve) Rinehart, Nicolette (Dave) Eyssen, Shawn (Erin Petticrew) McDonald and Brandon (Katelynd Beeman) McDonald, eight great grandchildren; a brother, Don (Sherry) Hankins of Centerburg and a sister, Betty (George) Reffit of Mount Vernon.

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Hankins, James Hankins and a sister, Janet “Toots” Puckett.

The family will observe a private service. The Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home of Mount Vernon is honored to serve the family of Shirley J. “Ma” Parmer.

Memorial contributions in Shirley’s name may be made to the Willow Grove Advent Christian Church or the American Cancer Society.

Vernon massesage me that Shirley had passed away my heart fell to the ground .She was a very precious friend, so are you Kay we love you both so much.I will remember her love and her prayers.I know how much she loved the Lord Kay, her faith was strong.
