Shirley E. Hess, 84, of Mount Vernon died Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at the Country Court Nursing Center.  She was born January 16, 1933 in Columbus to the late Clarence and Louisana (Boyer) Budd.

Shirley went to Homer High School, and after graduation worked for S. S. Kresge Company on Main St. in Mount Vernon for several years.  She worked in the kitchen at Country Court Nursing home for 25 years, and then volunteered her time there as well.  Shirley enjoyed making cakes for Country Court residences birthdays.  She was a member of the First Church of God in Mount Vernon, and also attended Grace Community Church.    

She enjoyed crocheting, flower gardening, wood working, crafts, and jewelry.  Most of all she loved being around her family.     

Shirley is survived by her husband of 62 years, George M. Hess Sr.; daughters, Dona (John) Richardson of, FL and Cathy (Rick) Davis of Howard; sons, George (Cindy) Hess Jr. of Mount Vernon and Russell (Brenda) Hess of Mount Vernon; 12 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. 

Addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her brother, Paul Boyer; a sister-in-law, Dona Boyer; and grandson, Christopher Hess.   

The family will receive friends from 11 am to 1:00 pm on Friday, April 21, 2017 at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Rd., Mount Vernon where a funeral service will be held at 1: pm with Pastor Roger Tickle officiating.  Burial will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.
