Seroba Jene Barkley

July 11, 1939 ‒ January 31, 2021

Marion, Ohio

Seroba Jene Barkley, age 81 of Marion, passed away Sunday, January 31, 2021 at Heartland of Bucyrus.

Seroba was born July 11, 1939 in Marion, the daughter of Grace Shumway. Three years later Grace passed away and Seroba was adopted and raised by her grandparents, August and Mable Porter.

Seroba served as manager of JCPenny for many years and then went on to work for Meijer’s until her retirement in 2005.

In her younger years, Seroba was a talented saxophone player and also played the piano by ear. She was a gifted tap dancer and baton twirler. Among her many talents was also that of a seamstress, creating numerous dance costumes and wedding dresses. Enjoying the snow and Christmas music were just some of the simple joys in her life. Selfless, generous, and unconditionally loving are only a few of the words that describe this amazing woman and don’t forget her famous gravy and incredible meals. When she retired, being the world’s greatest grandma was her main focus; she lived for her grandchildren and was their number one fan no matter what they did.

She will be dearly missed by her devoted husband of 53 years, Keith Barkley; children: Anissa Barkley and Derek (fiancée Danielle Kochis) Barkley; grandchildren: Ridge and Sidney Barkley; and siblings: Maureen Severns and Serena Johnson.

Seroba is preceded in death by her mother, grandparents and her sister Kelly Norris.

Visitation will be Monday, February 8, 2021 at Snyder Funeral Homes, Denzer Chapel, 360 East Center St., Marion from 5PM to 7PM; Funeral service will be Tuesday at the funeral home at 1PM; Burial will follow at Glendale Union Cemetery in Cardington.

If so desired, donations may be made to the Marion County Humane Society.

  • Seroba was a very special person to all of us . She has been with my practice for nearly 10 years. She always talked about the grandkids and going to their games. It didn’t matter what the weather was, she went. She was always smiling even when we knew she was in pain. She always was kind and never a bad word for anyone or anything.
I thought she was one of the strongest women I had ever met.
    We will miss her terribly.
    Rest in Peace my friend.

So very sorry for your loss. I still remember you visiting our family after the loss of my brother Rich. Kelley and I went to school together and were close in our younger years.
Prayers for comfort to you and Maureen and the extended family.
