Sarah Ellen Alkire, age 84, of Mt. Gilead, died Tuesday evening, May 8, 2001, at home surrounded by her family following an extended illness.
She was born in Mt. Gilead, on Nov 25, 1916, the daughter of the late Lester Lafayette and Lottie Byrd Hartwell Lee. She was a graduate of Mt. Gilead High School class of 1937.
She was a loving wife, mother and homemaker, as well as a clerk at Peoples bank in Mt. Gilead.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Mt. Gilead, where at one time she was an active member of the Women’s Organization.
She enjoyed sports of all kind, gardening, and was especially devoted to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Foster E. Alkire, whom she married on February 6, 1941 survives her along with her son and daughter-in-law David Lee & Cathy Alkire of Clemmons, North Carolina; her daughter and son-in-law Susan and Roger Waddell of Mt. Gilead; her eight grandchildren David & Beth Alkire & John Alkire,
Christine & Todd Schneider, Ty & Sarah Tuckerman, Tad & Mary Beth Tuckerman, Trisha & Troy Landon, Dane & Jamie Strait and
Heather and Andrew Bean; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother Charles Lee, and her sisters Margaret Stromberg, Wilma Van Wormer and Frances Whipple.
Friends may call Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Craven Funeral Home, 67 N. Main St. in Mt. Gilead. Graveside Services Friday at 11:00 a.m. Rivercliff Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Morrow County or the First Presbyterian Church of Mt. Gilead.
