Sally Jo Hopper

Sally Jo Hopper, age 60 of Galena passed away Sunday, April 23, 2017 at Select Specialty Hospital in Columbus following a two year battle against cancer.

She was born on July 4, 1956 in Kenton to Guy W. Heil and Patty (Jerew) Basinger both of Kenton.  Sally graduated from Kenton High School in 1974. She went on to earn degrees from Columbus Business University and The Ohio State University, during which time she met her husband to be Thomas W. Hopper.  She served in the US Navy and Navy Reserves retiring as Lt Commander.

Sally was a dedicated senior accountant with The Ohio State University Alumni Association and served as the Zoning and Planning Commission Clerk for the village of Galena for almost 30 years.  She enjoyed a passion for Scouting, serving as assistant scoutmaster of her son’s Troop 387 and had previously been their den leader with Pack 247.  Not one for the sidelines, Sally was an active participant in all that she did.  She was also attended Liberty Presbyterian Church.

Determined and fiercely loyal she was an amazing wife and mother.  She also enjoyed crafts, traveling, and looking forward to the next Scouting adventure.  Sally was someone you always wanted on your side.

Most proud of her family, she will be remembered as a fighter and for her extraordinary ways.

In addition to her parents Sally is also survived by her beloved husband of 32 years Thomas, sons Andrew N. and Zachary W. Hopper, brother  Ashley S. (Kathy) Heil of Kenton, nephew Austin C. Heil, nieces Jessica A. (Jesse)  Denardo, Kristin L. (Brian) Ulrich, and great-nephews  Avery, Conrad, and Cooper.

She was preceded in death by her daughter Abigail, Andrew’s twin in 1997.

Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday and one hour prior to the 11:00 Friday funeral services at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, 637 N. St. Rt. 61, Sunbury, Ohio 43074. Burial will follow in Galena Cemetery with military honors.

  • I was honored to meet Sally several years ago on a trip to Ohio..Her husband Thomas and I were classmates at Hayes..A friend of mine took me to surprise him since not seeing him in years..Sally said he wasn’t home but graciously called him..I found out that day what a very couragous and loving woman she was…And very family…I am so grateful to have briefly met her…And Tom I will be thinking of you and your family..Thoughts and prayers to all!!
