Ruth J. Barnes, age 89, of Mount Vernon passed away on Wednesday evening, November 30, 2011 at Knox Community Hospital. She was born on May 28, 1922 in Mount Vernon, daughter of the late Gordon and Emma (Graham) Shultz.

Ruth retired from the former Hart’s Department Store in Mount Vernon. She was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Mount Vernon and the Knox County Humane Society. Ruth was a great animal lover and along with husband, Floyd they rescued many cats and dogs over the years.

Ruth is survived by her husband of over 68 years, Floyd W. Barnes; son, Dan (Cathy) Barnes of Howard; grandchildren, Eric (Heather) Beach of Wake Forest, NC and Stephanie (Rod Mowery) Beach of Howard; great grandchildren, Elizabeth “Liz” Beach and Brandon Beach of Howard, Grace Beach and Emma Beach of Wake Forest, NC; sisters, Barbara Stout and Phyllis Shultz of Mount Vernon; best friend and caregiver, Priscilla Stricker of Mount Vernon; several nieces and nephews; and friends, Kent and Mary Haller of Tucson, AZ.

In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Frank Stout.

The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. on Sunday, December 4, 2011 at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 East High St., Mount Vernon. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, December 6, 2011 in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens with Pastor Ben McKinstry officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Ruth’s memory to the Knox County Humane Society, 400 Columbus Rd., Mount Vernon, OH 43050.
