Russell LeRoy “Russ” Frayer, age 92, of Orchard Drive, Mount Gilead, died early on Wednesday morning, November 8, 2006, at his residence following a four month illness.

He was born in Marion County, Ohio, on January 2, 1914, the son of the late John and Alice (Fetter) Frayer. Russ was a graduate of Claridon High School in the Class of 1932.

On July 9, 1938, Russell married his loving wife of over 68 years, Helen (Bolinger) Frayer, at their house in Edison. Shortly following their wedding, they moved to Mount Gilead where Helen still resides.

Russell worked for Marion Power Shovel until July 19th, 1938, when he began his career with the Hydraulic Press Manufacturing Company (H.P.M.). For 41 years, at H.P.M. he worked in Assembly Inspection and the Service Department, traveling all over the world for service calls until he retired in 1978. He truly was an expert at tinkering with and fixing things.

A quiet and simple man, Russ found pleasure in tending to the orchard behind the house; raising apples, pears, peaches, raspberries, strawberries, and much more. Many would call Russell inquiring about his secrets to growing fruit. As a family they would can fruit and make apple cider, which was shared with the neighborhood from their fruit stand in front of their house.

In addition to his wife, Russ will be missed by his daughters Becky Jordan of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Joan Frayer of Las Vegas, Nevada; a son David Frayer of Lawrence, Kansas; a granddaughter Michelle (Brian) Jordan Coppedge; two grandchildren Jordan & Nolan Coppedge; and his brother Kenneth (Merlyn) Frayer of Marion.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers Ernest and Harold Frayer; and three sisters Mary Brown, Ruth Smith, and Clara Mae Cocherl.

The family will greet friends on Friday from 4 – 7 p.m. at the Craven & Snyder Funeral Home, 67 North Main Street, Mount Gilead, where funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor J. Weston Jones officiating. Burial will follow at Rivercliff Cemetery in Mount Gilead.
