Ronald L. Zook, age 73 of Pataskala died Monday, March 10, 2008 at Licking Memorial Hospital.

He was born on June 6, 1934 in Anna, Ohio to the late Jesse and Thelma (Shockey) Zook. A graduate of Anna High School in 1952, he completed a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from The Ohio State University in 1958. A US Army veteran, he moved to Pataskala in 1986 from Clintonville.

He followed in his fathers footsteps and for over 40 years he worked with the Ohio Department of Transportation as assistant director and chief engineer, and chief engineer of maintenance.

He was a member of the American Society of Highway Engineers, Central Ohio Section President, 1985 – 1986, American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, member and Safety Task Force Leader of the subcommittee of maintenance, member Standing Committee for Highways,

A life member of The Ohio State University Alumni Association, Ohio society of Professional Engineers, member and former Chairman of State Government Engineers Committee, Engineers Club of Columbus, member and Past-President of Transportation Research Board, National Academy of Sciences, and a member of various committees on pavement and roadside maintenance.

He served on the advisory panel on strategic research program. A Member and Past President, he also served as a Board of Director Member from 1980 until 1991 of the State Transportation Employees Credit Union. With the American Brittany Club, he served as Regional Director from 1985 thru 1991, Fourth Vice-President from 1997 – 1999, and President from 2002 until 2007.

A member of York Masonic Lodge No. 563 F & AM, he was 32nd Degree Mason, Scottish Rite Valley of Columbus. He also served on the Wildlife Council for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources from 1994 -1998 and with the Professional Engineers and Surveyors Registration Board.

He was recognized by the Ohio Industries of the Handicapped as its Person of the Year for meritorious service in 1986, the Ohio chapter of the American Public Works Association career achievement award in 1993, and was nominated by American Traffic Safety Services Association, Inc. for the National Safety Award in 1993.

Most proud of this work with ODOT, he also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and especially golfing. He was also a former member of the Capital Club and Overbrook Presbyterian Church. Happiest at work, he was self-reliant, politically minded, and a true gentleman. He was always sincere, with a genuine concern for others.

Survived by his wife of 52 years: Rachel (Sheets) Zook; aunt, Katherine Shockey of Urbana, Brothers and Sisters-in-law: Merrill “Pinky”(Marilyn) Sheets of Delaware, Merlin “Boots” (Marlene) Sheets of Sunbury; nieces, nephews, a host of co-worker and organizational friends, and dear Brittany companions: Gator and Chip and Spade his horse.

Preceded in death by son: Dwight in 1979.

Friends may call Thursday 4-7 p.m., with Masonic services at 7:00 p.m. at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, SR’s 3 at 61, Sunbury, where services will be held Friday 11:00 a.m., Pastor Sonja Bender of the Kilbourne United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Green Mound Cemetery in Kilbourne.
