Robert Vernon McBeth

August 30, 1925 ‒ December 02, 2009

Marion, Ohio

Robert Vernon McBeth, age 84, of Green Camp, died early Wednesday morning, December 2, 2009, at Marion General Hospital.

On August 30, 1925, Robert was born in LaRue, the son of the late Samuel D. and Iva M. (Kelly) McBeth. He was a 1943 graduate of Marion Harding High School.

Shortly after graduating high school, Robert enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served as a private first class during World War II. A proud recipient of the Purple Heart, he had been injured in the Battle of the Bulge.

Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, Robert returned to Marion County, where he would marry his sweetheart, JoAnn L. (Millisor) McBeth, on November 10, 1951. Together they shared more than 50 years of marriage, until she preceded him in death on September 1, 2006.

For many years, Robert worked as a carpenter for Plumley Contractors. After Plumley’s, he worked for eleven years for the Marion County Highway Department, as a supervisor, and he retired in 1992.

An extremely dedicated family man, Robert was always concerned about his family and they were top priority in his life. He loved to travel with them “anywhere there was a road,” and his wife often would add, “sometimes where there weren’t roads.”

During his free time, Robert enjoyed fishing for perch and boating on Lake Erie. He also loved to tend to his garden of vegetables, especially his sweet corn.

He was a member of the Pleasant Senior Citizens, Green Camp Senior Citizens, Marion County Fish and Game Club, and a life member of the disabled American Veterans.

Robert will be dearly missed by his children: Marilyn Jo McBeth of Green Camp, Robert D. (Marilyn) McBeth of Marion, Ronald A. (Paula Everett) McBeth of Marion, Thomas W. (Mary) McBeth of New Bloomington, Raymond K. McBeth of Marion; sister-in-law: Mary Millisor of Columbus; brother-in-law: Lewis Caskey of Marion; grandchildren: Michael R., Sarah K., Joseph W., Joshua T. McBeth; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and parents, Robert was preceded in death by his sister, Deloris Sullivan; and two brothers: Meredith and Wayne McBeth.

The McBeth family will receive friends from 5 – 8 p.m. on Friday, December 4, 2009, at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home in Marion, where the services will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. with Pastors Dave Lippert and Mandy Rice officiating. Burial with military honors provided by the Marion County United Veterans Council will follow at Green Camp Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 870 Michigan Ave., Columbus, Ohio 43215.
