Robert S. “Bob” Eberhardt, age 85, of 11195 Pineview Lane Mount Vernon, died Tuesday December 7, 2010 at his residence, surrounded by his loving family. Bob was born November 12, 1925 in Hamestown, Ohio to Leo and Lucy (Young) Eberhardt and attended Hamestown High School. Bob served with the United States Navy aboard submarines during World War Two.
He retired after 27 years service as a mail carrier with the United States Postal Service in Howard and Mount Vernon. Prior to his service with the postal service, Bob and his wife Dory, owned the Howard Hardware and then the Howard Grocery Store in the 1960’s.
Bob loved to fish at Lake Erie on his Lyman boat as well as golfing, gardening, canning, cooking, crossword puzzles and solitaire on the computer. He had a sense of humor and an orneriness for which people will always remember Bob.
He was a member of the Howard United Methodist Church, Ohio Lodge #199 F&AM in Bladensburg, Valley of Columbus Scottish Rite, Cam Ram Grotto in Mount Vernon, Knox Chapter #236 Order of Eastern Star, American Legion and Colonial City Moose Lodge #2555 in Mount Vernon and the Submarine Veterans of World War Two.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years Dolores “Dory” Eberhardt, daughter and son-in-law Rebecca and John Blubaugh of Howard, 2 grandchildren; a great grandchild; his sister Miriam Crow of Danville and several nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his son Dennis Eberhardt, brothers Dave Eberhardt and Gene Eberhardt and sisters June Myer and Harriet Volkmor.
Masonic Memorial services followed by a funeral service will be Saturday December 11, 2010 at 2pm at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon, Ohio. Entombment, with military honors by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council, will follow at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens. Friends may call on Saturday at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home from 11am until time of the services at 2pm.
