Robert P. “Bob” Carlin, age 88, of Leedy Road, Bellville, died Wednesday July 4, 2012 in the Palliative Care Unit at the Knox Community Hospital in Mount Vernon following an extended illness.

Bob was born February 2, 1924 in Knox County to Robert Jay Carlin and Ethlyn (Burgholder) Carlin. He grew up in Waterford and helped at the family store. He played basketball for the Fredericktown High School and after the war, he played fast-pitch softball. Bob served with the United States Army Air Force in China during World War Two earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. After his service to his country, Bob took courses in agriculture at Mount Vernon under the GI bill and purchased a farm in southern Richland County. Bob and his family continued to raise animals and growing crops up until his declining health. Bob enjoyed the time he spent with his grandsons helping them with their 4-H and FFA projects.

He retired as a Supervisor of Contracts for the Hartman Electric Manufacturing in Mansfield, retiring in February 1989 with 33 years of faithful service. During those 33 years at Hartman, he earned perfect attendance awards. Bob was a member of the Waterford Church of Christ and the Irvin Hiskey Post #535 of American Legion in Bellville for 65 years. He had been an active member of a weekly bowling league at Trio Lanes in Fredericktown.

Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Marjorie I. (Snow) Carlin, daughter Debra Carlin of Bellville; son Robert (Diana) Carlin of Bellville; grandchildren Joel Carlin and Zac Carlin and his sister Anita Linn of Midlothian, Virginia. Besides his parents Bob was preceded in death by his brother Eugene Carlin.

Friends may call Friday July 6, 2012 from 5PM to 8PM and Saturday July 7, 2012 from 10AM to 11AM at the Snyder Funeral Home, 33 East College Street, Fredericktown, Ohio 43019. Funeral services will be Saturday at 11AM at the funeral home with Troy Northrup officiating. Burial will follow in Shauck Cemetery, Johnsville.
