BELLVILLE: Robert Layfield passed away Saturday, February 20, 2021 in Riverside Methodist Hospital following a short illness.

He was born April 15, 1953 in Mansfield to Keith and Dora May (Boyce) Layfield and graduated from Clear Fork High School in 1971.

Bob worked over 25 years doing auto body work and retired from All-State as an insurance adjuster.

He was a long-time member of Chapel Hill United Methodist Church and coached youth soccer.

After retirement, Bob was free to pursue his passion and dream of becoming a strawberry farmer.  He and Mary spent the first season at Rocky Acres Strawberry Farm on their hands and knees caring for the crop.  They quickly became aware that they needed help and strawberry picking is for the young!  On their rural Bellville property, Bob also kept several hives of bees and enjoyed making maple syrup.

He enjoyed golf and hunting mostly deer, and had also made a successful trip to Canada in pursuit of black bear.  “Donald the Deer” his favorite mount was addressed hello and goodbye by the grandkids coming and going.  Bob was the king of homemade ice cream, and was never shy about taking the largest bowl after working hard making it for family gatherings.  Bob loved music, especially anything from the 60s or Meatloaf, and even learned the 2 step and waltz for family barn parties.  He loved breakfast at the V&M restaurant and will be remembered for his ornery teasing and light hearted temperament.

He is survived by his wife Mary (Williams) Layfield of Bellville, children Heidi McManes, Carrie (Nathan) Shaum all of Mansfield, step son Donald Fiant of AZ; eleven grandchildren Rowan, Sydney, Kellan, Nolan, Beckett, Harley, Emma, Mia, Liliann, Dalton and Dylan; a great granddaughter Jessie; his father Keith Layfield; siblings Jake (Ruth) Layfield, Ron Layfield, Donna (John) Borkowski, Jerry Layfield, and Jim (Lynna) Layfield; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Les Williams, and Pat Dion, along with numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

Bob was preceded in death by his mother Dora May Layfield, a brother Bradley Layfield, step son Darryl Fiant, father-in-law and mother-in-law Paul and Ruth Williams, and sisters-in-law Cindy Layfield and Linda Williams.

Friends may call Thursday, February 25, 2021 from 4-7 pm in the LEXINGTON AVENUE Snyder Funeral Home.  The funeral service will be a private family service, however friends and extended family are welcome to join virtually on the LEXINGTON AVENUE Snyder Funeral Home Facebook page Friday at 11 am.  The Rev. Donna Mills will officiate and Bob will be laid to rest in Bellville Cemetery.

Donations in honor of Bob may be made to the Bellville-Jefferson Township Rescue Squad or Chapel Hill United Methodist Church.
