Robert Joseph West
July 23, 1918 ‒ October 27, 2007
MANSFIELD: Robert Joseph West, 89, of Ashland Road, Mansfield, died Saturday, October 27, 2007 in Mifflin Care Center following a short illness.
He was born July 23, 1918 in Akron to Michael and Katherine (Marsalka) and spent most of his life in the Mansfield area, with the exception of winters in Florida.
Bob devoted 49 years to his wife Zettie Lou (Hall) West who preceded him in death on June 28, 2005.
For 35 years Robert was the owner and operator of Bob’s Mobile Homes before his retirement in 1976. Never one to stay still, Bob’s retirement was only temporary. He later opened Ocala Travel Trailer Parts and Supply, and kept busy there for five more years.
He is a former member of the Moose #341, the Robert P. Spreng Post No. 26 AMVETS, and VFW Post #3494. Robert was also a member and past president of the Lions Club in Silver Springs, Florida. There, he was active in various volunteer projects of the club, mostly assisting the handicapped.
The young boy in Robert never gave up his love for model trains, airplanes, and cars. Light hearted and fun, Bob loved to go dancing, and would often be the one to close down the dance floor.
Known to have an ornery streak, Bob was not one to take life to seriously. His quick wit always kept you guessing. However, no one could ever question the importance of his wife, children and grandchildren.
Robert is survived by seven children and their spouses Richard and Jackie West, Roberta West, Dennis and Shellie West, Lu Ann Howard, and Vickie West all of Mansfield, Tracey Whiting of Clearwater, Florida, and Katherine West of Ocala, Florida; twelve grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; seven great great grandchildren, and a close niece Barbara Ward of Mansfield.
In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by two sisters Alice Marker and Anna Albert, and two grandchildren.
Friends may call Wednesday, October 31, 2007 from 11am until 1 pm in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home, where the funeral service will be held at 1pm. Chaplain Bohley of the 179th Air Lift Wing will officiate. Interment will be at a later date in Mansfield Cemetery.
Memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society or Lions Club may be made at the funeral home.
