BELLVILLE: Robert “Jake” Miller, 84, of Bellville passed away peacefully Thursday, September 8, 2016 at his home.

The son of Chester and Elsie (Zaebst) Miller, Jake was born March 19, 1932 in Mansfield and was graduated from Bellville High School in 1950.

Jake served in the Army during the Korean War from 1953-1955 and was honorably discharged.  On January 18, 1953 he married Joan Kelly and celebrated 63 wonderful years of marriage.

Jake along with Bob Flowers, cofounded Home and Kitchen Supply Company.  Jake retired in 1989.

He looked forward to spending winters in Naples, Florida.  Jake enjoyed fishing and boating and has found memories of traveling the United States with along with Joan in their motor home.

Never one to sit still he enjoyed many things including family, friends and working around his farm north of Bellville.  He also spent many years raising cattle and percheron horses.  He showed his horses in parades, at Malabar Farm and at the Richland County Fair.

After retirement Jake cut firewood.  On sunny days and through hot and cold weather, it didn’t matter to Jake.  If he had a chainsaw in hand he was having a good day.

Handy, Jake built his own home and the first apartments in Bellville.  He was a man who instilled a strong work and business ethic in his children.  He enjoyed working on projects for the farm and helping his children in planning and building their homes.

He was a 32nd Degree Mason and 60 year member of the Bellville Masonic Lodge #376, member of the Homebuilders Association of Mansfield, the Ohio Retail Lumber Dealers Association, and served as past president and member of the Mansfield Exchange Club.  He was a member and attended St. Paul Lutheran Church.  He was a lifetime member of the Percheron Horse Association and member of the Central Ohio Draft Horse Association.

He is survived by his loving wife Joan (Kelly) Miller of Bellville, children Ken (Diana) Miller of Bellville, Brad Miller of Bellville and special friend Connie Tier, Darrell (Rene) Miller of Lexington, and Judy (Chuck) Golden of Bellville; grandchildren Kristy (Shane) Walker, Kelli (Joe) Cyrus, Ben Miller, Andy (Shera) Miller, Steven Miller and special friend Brielle Sautter, Joey Miller, Devin Eggerton, Luke Golden, MacKenzie Golden, and Valerie Golden; six great grandchildren.

Along with his parents he was preceded in death by infant children Chris and Amy Miller.

The Miller family will receive friends Sunday, September 11, 2016 from 2-5 pm in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home where at 5 pm Masonic Services will be performed by the Bellville Masonic Lodge #376.  Funeral services will be Monday at 2pm at the funeral home. Pastor Doug Pretorius will officiate. Jake will ride oh his horse drawn wagon to Bellville Cemetery where graveside services will be held.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Jefferson Township/Bellville Rescue Squad or Hospice of North Central Ohio may be made through the funeral home.

  • So sorry to hear of Jake’s passing he was always so good to Jim and our family when Jim was so sick he brought his whole family over plus all his equipment and cut wood all day cause he knew Jim could not do it he was a great neighbor we will miss you and thanks for all you did for us
