Robert H. Bechtel, age 76, of Fairway Drive, Mount Vernon, died Tuesday September 3, 2002 at Country Court Nursing Home in Mount Vernon. He was born December 25, 1925 in Stark County to the late Curtis and Vera (Humphrey) Bechtel.
Mr. Bechtel graduated from Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education and received a Masters degree at Ohio University. He was an instrumental music teacher in the Mount Vernon Schools from August 1957 to June 1, 1982 when he retired from teaching with thirty-five total years.
Mr. Bechtel formed the Mello-Jackets stage band in 1958 and enjoyed his association with his students throughout the remainder of his career. The Mello Jackets entered two to three competitions each year and rarely came home with anything less than first place.
Throughout his career, he was very active as a professional musician having been trombonist with the Columbus Symphony, “The Best is Yet to Come”, the Jimmy Frank Orchestra, Jack Cole Orchestra, Ran Wild Orchestra, Blue Baron Orchestra, Guy Lombardo Orchestra and many various local groups in Mansfield, Columbus, and throughout central Ohio.
In 1983, he formed the Bob Bechtel Big Band from local musicians and ex-students.
He is survived by his wife Joanne, whom he married June 19th 1949, three daughters; Dale Jean (Curtis) Stockhausen of West Bend, WI, Robin Jo (Raymond) Enderle of Mainville, Ohio, Leslie Ann (Jeffrey) Nepper of Delafield, WI , a son, Dr. Robert Kurt (Teri) Bechtel of Woodenville, WA, five grandchildren, Alexander Kain, Elizabeth Kain, Shannon Frost, Mathew and Mark Bechtel and a brother Dale Bechtel of Hawaii.
Friends may call Thursday from 5 to 7 PM at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home where a memorial service will be at 7 PM with Rev. Christine Widrig officiating.
