MANSFIELD: Robert Filter, age 79, of Perrysville, passed away Saturday evening September 25, 2010 in Cleveland Clinic following a brief illness.
He was born August 19, 1931 in Carbon Hill, Ohio the son of Paul and Goldie (McGaffey) Filter .
Robert served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.
In 1980 he married Lindy Davis, a former sweetheart for whom is affections never faded.
For 38 years Robert worked in Mansfield at the former AK Steel as a crane operator. Before his retirement, he was the most senior in his division there.
Robert was a member of VFW post #3494, and enjoyed fishing.
Most of all Robert was a loving family man and treasured his grandchildren. He was “bigger than life” with a wonderful sense of humor. Robert was also a great story teller, and his tales will be shared with generations to come.
He is survived by his wife Lindy Filter, daughter Pamela Chelski of Mansfield, two sons and a daughter-in-law Robert Filter, II of Florida, and Tom and Donna Filter of Mansfield, step children Joseph Taylor of Perrysville, Phyllis Davis of Mansfield, Dennis and Crystal Vanorman of Mansfield, 13 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by a step son Johnny Ray Taylor, a grandson Bradley Taylor, and a great granddaughter, his first wife ZoAnn Filter, a brother Ralph Filter, and three sisters Dorothy Rutherford, Helen Stiver and Loretta.
Graveside services will be held in Mansfield Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail. The Rev. Earl Tackett will officiate. The Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home is serving the Filter family.
