Robert Edward “Bob” Hodges

MANSFIELD: Robert Edward “Bob” Hodges, 84, of Mansfield passed away Thursday afternoon July 27, 2017 in Riverside Methodist Hospital.

Born October 20, 1932, in Kingsport, Tennessee, Bob was a star baseball player for his high school varsity baseball team.  A great first baseman, he later played for the St. Louis Cardinal’s semiprofessional team.

An Army veteran, Bob served from 1954-1956.  He worked for the Mount Vernon News as head of advertising.  A talented pianist, as a child, Bob was formally trained by his mother.  However he could play by ear, often incorporating his own style to classic songs.  While attending Anderson College, he met and sang with the Gaithers!  Over the years, Bob also sang with the Capitol City and Glory Way quartets.

He was a member of the Bellville First Baptist Church where he played the piano.

Bob is survived by his wife Lilly Hodges of Mansfield; daughter Sherrie Lynn Kirkland of Nebraska; step children Chuck (Jane) Sesco of Mt. Vernon, Gary (Sandra) Sesco of Fayetteville, NY, and Diana Minich of Columbus; 14 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren.

His family will receive friends Monday, July 31, 2017 from 10am-12pm in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home where his funeral will begin at 12pm.  Rev. Bill Henderson will officiate and burial with military honors performed by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail will follow in Oak Grove Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Bellville First Baptist Church may be made at the funeral home.

  • I’m so sorry for your loss of Bob. Loss leaves a such a hole in your life that never goes away. We were so glad he was part of Michelle and Lee’s wedding. I will always have his music from that day.
