Robert Dean “Bob” Pipes

December 14, 1930 ‒ April 24, 2012

Bellville, Ohio

BELLVILLE: On April 24th, Robert Dean “Bob” Pipes passed away at Hospice of North Central Ohio with his loving and devoted wife at his side.

Bob was born on December 14, 1930 to Alma (Kinsey) and Arthur Pipes. He met the love of his life, Juanita Grubb, while attending Butler High School, and they were married on January 29, 1951. Bob served 2 ½ years in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War.

He was well known and respected in the area as an honest, hard-working man who was always willing to help others. The last few years, as his health declined, were especially hard for him – there was so much he would have liked to have done to help others, but was no longer physically able to do so.

Bob’s faith was most important in his life – as he said many times, “he was bought and paid for”. He was a charter member of the Clear Fork Alliance Church and donated many hours during the construction of that church, and other community projects over the years. Bob was owner/operator of Grubb & Pipes Excavating for 35 years, and built many of the streets and foundations of homes and businesses in the Mount Vernon and surrounding areas.

Bob loved to fish, hunt, and grow a big garden. He and Juanita made many fishing trips to Canada and area lakes to try to catch the big ones. A lot of the time, “Clutch” (his nickname for Juanita) outdid him in both size and quantity of fish. His greatest joy, however, came from being with his family and in the giving of himself and his many talents to help others. Bob was a member of Men for Missions International, and made many trips to Haiti, where he ran a bulldozer helping to build a road through the mountains for the Haitian people.

Known as “Pop Pop” to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he taught his family the importance of hard work and being a person of integrity and compassion.

He is survived by wife Juanita of Bellville; daughters Linda Swetlic of Howard and Sherrye (Dave) Stein of Bellville; grandson Joshua (Melissa) Stein of Mansfield and granddaughter Sarah (Stein) Lorentz and fiancé Tim Tingley of Bellville; great-grandchildren Austin, Kylie, Keegan, and Andrew Lorentz and Lauren Branch; brother Larry (Lynne) Pipes of Butler and sister Carol (Ron) Selking of Decatur, Indiana.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Doug; brothers Richard and Ronald; son-in-law James Swetlic, Sr.; mother and father-in-law Harvey and Katy Grubb.

Services celebrating the life of Bob Pipes will be held on Saturday, April 28, at 3pm in the Clear Fork Alliance Church, 1008 St.Rt. 97, Bellville, Ohio where the family will receive friends two hours prior from 1-3pm. Military honors will be performed by the Bellville American Legion Post #535. The Rev. Dr. Michael Stine will officiate. Bob’s family would like to welcome all who knew and loved him to come join them in this time of remembrance.

The Pipes family has chosen Bellville Snyder Funeral Homes for services and memorial contributions to the Clear Fork Alliance Church or Hospice of North Central Ohio may be made through the funeral home.
