Robert C. Carpenter, age 71, of Mount Vernon died Sunday July 21, 2002 at Wawing Lake Resort in Ontario, Canada of an apparent heart attack. Robert was born July 9, 1931 in Malaga, Ohio to Clifford E. and Pearl (Stephen) Carpenter and had spent most of his lifetime in the Mount Vernon area. He served in the U S Army 82nd Airborne Division. Robert had been employed as a journeyman machinist for Cooper Industries in Mount Vernon, Ohio Brass Company in Mansfield, Mount Vernon Machine Tool and retired from Hydraulic Press Manufacturing in Mount Gilead. He was an avid sportsman and loved the Cleveland Indians and Cleveland Browns.

Surviving are his wife Nora (Coon) Carpenter whom he married February 19, 1954; five sons Cliff (Amy) Carpenter, David (Jeanette) Carpenter, and Chad (Sara Hess) Carpenter all of Mount Vernon, Rob (Deb) Carpenter of Howard and Josh (Staci) Carpenter of Orrville; two daughters Lynne (Russ) Edgar of Edgar Springs, Missouri and Jill Carpenter of Mount Vernon; 8 grandchildren; 3 great granddaughters; 3 brothers Elmer (Gerry) Carpenter and Neil (Barbara) Carpenter both of Mount Vernon and Irvin (Mary) Carpenter of North Liberty; and 2 sisters Evelyn McCleary and Judy Clevenger both of Mount Vernon. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by 4 sisters Viola Robinson, Mary Ann Davis, Betty Carpenter and Joan Carpenter and 4 brothers Harold Stephen, Edward Carpenter, Francis Carpenter and Virgil Carpenter.

Friends may call Thursday from 5 to 8 PM at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home in Mount Vernon where funeral Services will be Friday at 11 AM with Rev. Brian Durbin officiating. Burial with Military honors by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council will be in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.
