Robert “Bob” Burwell

October 23, 1929 ‒ December 27, 2019

Sunbury, Ohio
Dr. Robert “Bob” Burwell, age 90, passed away December 27, 2019 at his home in Sunbury, OH, surrounded by loving family.  His heart is whole again as he is now dancing in heaven with his bride.
To say he touched a lot of lives in his time here is an understatement.   He was adored by his family, and those that knew him were honored to call him a friend.  Bob deeply loved his family and always talked about how blessed he was when really we were the lucky ones.  He had sparkling blue eyes and a smile that lit up the room.  He was ornery but genuine.  Kind yet quick witted.  Bob will be missed by so many but his life is one worth celebrating.
Bob was born on October 23, 1929 in Columbus, OH.  He married his high school sweetheart on December 22, 1951 and could still give you every detail of their first date.  He graduated from The Ohio State University in 1954 and practiced veterinary medicine for 35 years.
He touched so many lives, both human and animal, through his years of dedicated practice. Bob was never short on stories from all his experiences as a Veterinarian.  After retirement, he and Joan spent much of their time in Kissimmee, FL and visited Disney World often.  Bob loved all sports and was an avid Buckeye fan.
Bob is survived by his four daughters, Diane (Steve) Fleak, Sharma (Gerry) Azzi, Pam (Kim) Greenawalt and Bonnie (Randy) Marchio, who radiate the same unconditional love that he and Joan inspired in so many.  He also has 12 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren with a great-great grandchild on the way.    He is preceded in death by his soul mate, Lois “Joan” Burwell.  Also preceded in death by his parents Harry Dale Burwell and Thelma Pearl (Schirtzinger) Burwell.
At his request, Bob will be cremated and will join Joan’s ashes and no formal services will be held.  The family is grateful for the condolences.  Donations may be made in his name to the American Cancer Society.

  • To Dr Burwell family and friends! My deepest sympathies! He was such a kind man who took good care of our animals throughout the years. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers during these difficult days. God bless!

  • I met Bob long ago as a child, when he cared for my family’s farm animals. Soon I met his in laws. When Linda and were first married, we were neighbors. Bob gave me good advice at the backyard fence. We are so blessed to have had this time with Bob and Joan. Thank you for sharing them with us. Our sympathy to all of you.

  • John and I have many fond memories of Doc Burwell, as a kind and special Vet to an amazing father and Grandfather to his family. Hugs and Prayers Mr and Mrs Burwell are driving their MG in heaven looking down on us

  • Diane, Sharma, Pam, and Bonnie:

I am so sorry and so sad to hear about your dad’s passing. What a great man he was, and your mom was so awesome. I saw them when I was in town to visit daddy and they were just so happy – that’s how I will always remember them…smiling and so much in love.

Please know I am keeping you all close in my heart and in my prayers. I wish I could be there to give you all hugs of love and support.

May God bless you, comfort you, and give you peace.

  • Doc will be missed. What a wonderful person and vet. There will never be another vet like he was. He was so caring. He is now with Joann to be sure. Condolences to his daughters.

  • To the Burwells:

Just heard about your father’s passing. I will remember him caring and healing our many pets. We would pass your house everyday as we walked to Harrision St Elem
. Your parents were always involved in all the community groups , and events going on in Sunbury. My Dad’s store was a only a stone’s throw from your office. and they were often busy with church or Lions etc. Find peace and love in your many memories. Our thoughts and sympathy are with you. • Dear family,

Bob was a cornerstone to Sunbury and the Big Walnut community. I feel blessed to have related to both Bob and Joan over the years be it at church, the veterinary clinic, school, or at Wendy’s. I miss them both and will always remember you all very fondly. The old house and clinic will always be Burwell’s to Bette and I.

  • So sorry to hear about Dr. Burwell’s passing. He was a wonderful veterinarian, plus he was always quick witted when he saw our pets. RIP Dr. Burwell. Prayers for his family and friends. if I remember correctly, my dad use to bring his coon hounds when his office was in his basement.

  • I was very sorry to hear about Dr Burwell’s passing. I haven’t lived in Sunbury for a long time, but I will always have fond memories of taking my animals to see him. He was there for us night and day. We named one of my childhood cats “Doc” after Dr. Burwell. I’m happy knowing he has joined his love.

My condolences to his family and friends during this time of loss

  • Our deepest sympathy to all of you. Your dad was a kind and loving person. Never a stranger did he meet.
He loved his animals that came to his practice like a member of your family. Our prayers will be with you

  • I am so saddened to see the passing of Dr. Burwell. He was our family vet for almost thirty years. He was the “Dr. Marcus Welby” for the animal world. Bob always went over and beyond to help our pets through accidents, pneumonia and other dire situations. There will only be one Dr. Burwell. Thank you for sharing your father with us.
My prayers go out to you .
