Robert “Big Daddy” Johnson

Robert W. “Big Daddy” Johnson, age 83 of Sunbury died Sunday evening, January 20, 2008 at Countryview of Sunbury.

He was born on September 23, 1924 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to the late Robert and Julia (Vavra) Johnson. A US Marine Corp veteran of WW II, he served as a crew chief with the Air Corp and had been resident of central Ohio for the past 50 years. Before retiring, he worked as a sales representative for men’s and boy’s apparel and was a school bus driver for Olentangy Schools.

A former Trenton Township trustee, he was a devoted member of the Sunbury Eagles, where he was past president and held numerous offices. He was also a member of Elks Lodge of Carlisle, PA, V.F.W. Post #8763 and former commander of AMVets Post 59 in Centerburg.

Always jovial, he was proud to be an American and was a true Patriot. He enjoyed the comradeship of his fellow Eagle members and never knew a stranger. Big Daddy was an avid sports fan of the New York Giants, Yankees, the Ohio State Buckeyes, and his home state Gophers of the University of Minnesota. Willing to sacrifice for other and help anyone in need, he will be remembered for his love of family, friends, and mankind.

Survived by his children: Debra (Mark) Deem of Sunbury, Robbie Johnson of Westerville, Steven (Sylvia) Johnson of Sunbury, Richard (Debbie) Johnson of Prospect, 8 Grandchildren: Jeremiah, Amanda, Branda, Chip, Kandra, Darcy, Chad, Chelsea, Great-grandchildren; Dravin Thane, Abigail Mae, nephew George, nieces Gretchen, Holly, as well as a host of friends.

Preceded in death by daughter-in-law Sarah Johnson in 2004 and sister Bonnie Boehme.

Friends may call Wednesday 4-8:00 p.m., with Eagle services 8:00 p.m., at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, SR’s 3 at 61, Sunbury, where services will be held Thursday 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Rob Morgan officiating. Burial will follow in Trenton Cemetery with military honors provided by the Delaware County Veterans Association.
