Robert A. Barr, age 86, of Lexington, died Sunday, February 9, 2003, in Lexington Court Care Center following a long illness.

Robert was born April 1, 1916 in Richland County to Atwood B. and Flora (Oberlin) Barr, attended Bellville High School, and was a lifelong area resident.

A WWII Army veteran, he served in the American theater. In 1978 Robert retired from the Tappan Co. with over 30 years of service. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Bellville Lions Club, Tappan Quarter Century Club, Irvin Hiskey Post #535 American Legion, Bellville, and was a former 4-H advisor.

Robert was an avid gardener, and won several awards for his gardening skills. He also enjoyed the out of doors, hunting and fishing.

He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law Larry E. and Monya Barr, a daughter and son-in-law Linda and Bruce Steel all of Bellville; three stepsons Ronald F. Maxwell and Kenneth R. Maxwell both of Texas, and Richard F. Maxwell of Bellville; a stepdaughter and her husband Susan R. and Gene Hershner of Lexington; 5 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and one great great grandson; 6 step grandchildren, 3 step great grandchildren; a brother Lloyd Barr; and a sister Georgia Moore both of Lexington.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Effie (Ohler) Barr; his second wife Edna (Milem Maxwell) Barr; two brothers Raymond Barr and James D. Barr; two sisters Nina Paxton and Harriett Swisher; and a step grandson.

Friends may call today, Tuesday February 11, 2003 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home where the funeral will be held Wednesday at 11 am. The Rev. Douglas J. Pretorius will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow in Bellville Cemetery.
