Mount Gilead, Ohio

Rita L. Kimmey, age 78, of Mount Gilead, went to be with the Lord, Saturday morning, June 1, 2019.

Rita was born on April 13, 1941, in Jackson County, to the late Lovell N. and Lovetta (Spurrier) Clay. In 1960, Rita graduated from Jackson High School where she had been a member of the marching band. With a love for education, Rita would spend the rest of her life continuing to learn. Her formal education included: an associates degree in teaching from Rio Grande, bachelors degree from the Ohio State University, her masters from Mount St. Joseph University, and a certificate from Tel Aviv University in Israel. Rita also studied for a summer in Germany as that was the epicenter for her studies in the Holocaust.

While serving as a camp consoler at a Christian camp, Rita met a fellow consoler whom she had fallen in love with. The two began dating and on April 16, 1965 she would marry the love of her life, Edward Kimmey.

Rita began her 30 years of educating the young with her first placement at Montgomery Schools. After one year in Montgomery, Rita worked with Columbus City Schools for the next two years. She finally found an opening with Mount Gilead and would retire from there in 1995. As a teacher Rita taught grades 1 through 6, Jr. High reading, and was able to create a special program that emphasized on the Holocaust.

With a gift to serve others, Rita held near and dear to her many local organizations. She was a part of the Jail Ministry for 22 years. Rita started with the Angel Tree program and later moved into leading weekly ladies groups at the prison. She was a lifelong member of the Morrow County Chapter of the Gideons International Auxiliary.  As a member of the Red Hat Society, she served as past Queen Mother. With passion for the outdoors, Rita was a member of Green Pair Garden Club. She also enjoyed dancing with the Hicks and Chicks square dance club. Rita was often called upon to make her famous pecan pie, her dad’s favorite, and was always willing to do so for any of the social gatherings she went to.

Giving God the glory, Rita was a member of Bryn Zion Baptist Church. She also enjoyed attending services at the Sar Shalom Messianic Congregation in Mansfield. Rita was active in numerous walks to Emmaus where she was able to grow spiritually.

Oh the stories her suitcase could tell. Rita loved to travel. She was able to travel to Israel, Egypt, Niger, Germany, France, Belgium, Netherland, Denmark, and Poland. With a passion for the holocaust she made sure to visit many of the historic places while overseas such as Auschwitz. State side, Rita made the trip numerous times to the Holocaust Conference in Washing D.C. where she was able to meet and interact with many survivors of the war.

She will be dearly missed by her husband, Ed; children: Jennifer Kimmy and Michael Kimmey both of Fort Lauderdale, FL; grandsons: Charles and Samuel Shearer both of Fort Lauderdale; sister-in-law, Donna Gardner of Columbus; brother-in-law, Jim (Beth)Kimmey of Mount Gilead; close cousin, Mary (Rex) Siegfried of Mount Gilead; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Rita was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Gene Fout; sister, Suanne Humphrey; aunt, Sue Turk; and sister-in-law, Margaret Reyes.

Her family will greet friends from 1 to 4 PM, on Saturday, June 8, 2019, at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel. (67 N. Main St., Mount Gilead, OH 43338) Services celebrating her life will be held 2:30 PM, at the Bryn Zion Baptist Church, with the pastoral team of Jeff Hubschman, Dave Smith, Steve McElhatten, and Simon Avila officiating.  (5520 County Road 240, Mount Gilead, OH 43338) Burial will be held privately at Bryn Zion Baptist Church.

If desired memorial contributions may be made in Rita’s memory to either the Gideons International Morrow County Chapter and/or the Morrow County Prison Ministry.

She was such a caring, funny lady. I always counted it a blessing that I got to work with her and know her. May God bless and comfort you in the days ahead. Laura Pearce

  • Rita was such a blessing to me as we served together in Emmaus. She was touched by my husband Art’s poem, and after he went to heaven she shared it as agape for all the pilgrims and team members every single time we served together. She was extreme in her love for our Lord, and she simply shined with His love! I am praying for your family

  • Dear Mr. Kimmey,

Your amiable style, presenting us middle schoolers with an introduction to mineralogy, led in me to a lifelong fascination with rocks, minerals and geology. I’ve found fragments of geodes and understand how they formed within volcanic bubbles. Thank you for being a fine instructor. And Jim, since you’re also “this side of the green,” to use a golfing metaphor, I presume you’ve backed off somewhat on the gas pedal! Life goes on.
