MANSFIELD: Richard R. Gardner, 89, of Mansfield passed away Monday February 6 , 2012. He will be forever remembered as being loving, faithful, courageous and strong both personally and professionally. Richard was born January 16 , 1923 in Athens, the son of Ray and Maude (Pendergrass) Gardner and was graduated from Athens High School in 1941. He earned his Bachelors of Science in Commerce from Ohio University in 1948.

Serving in the Marine Corps during WWII, Dick was stationed in Maui and Okinawa.

On February 10, 1945 he married Veda Shoemaker. The two moved to Mansfield in 1948, where Dick was owner and operator of Gardner Nationwide Insurance Agency, retiring in 1985 after 37 years.

Richard’s faith was extremely important to him. A devout Christian, he was an active member of the Linden Road Presbyterian Church. He served as elder, deacon and Stephen Minister in the Presbyterian Church.

Dick was a member of Kingwood Center Men’s Garden Club, Richland County Farm Bureau, Charter member of the Mansfield Noon Lions Club, Alcoholics Anonymous, Venus Masonic Lodge #152 F&AM, North Central Aids Foundation, Mansfield Sister City Club and volunteered at the Gorman Nature Center.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years Veda Gardner of Mansfield; daughter Leslie (William) Stevens of Lucas; sister-in-law Rieta Shoemaker of Athens, nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his son Richard Gardner.

The Gardner family will receive friends Saturday, February 18, 2012 from 10-11am at Linden Road Presbyterian Church, 160 South Linden Road, Mansfield, Ohio 44906, where memorial services will begin at 11am. The Rev. Andrew Gerhart will officiate. Military honors performed by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail will follow.

Memorial contributions to the Gorman Nature Center may be made through the funeral home.
