Richard W. Jessup, Sr. 86, met face to face with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, March 19, 2010, at the Knox Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on October 26, 1923, in Painted Post, New York to the late Murray Jessup and Mable (Casey) Jessup.

Mr. Jessup served as a Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy for 10 years during World War II and the Korean War. He left the service with an Honorable Discharge.

Mr. Jessup came to Mt. Vernon in 1953 after serving in the Navy and was employed by Cooper Bessemer testing engines in the test house. He worked there for 20 years before starting his own business, Richard W. Jessup & Sons in 1978.

Mr. Jessup helped build several churches in the area, including Emmanuel Baptist Church and Faith Baptist Church of Mt. Vernon where he and his wife are charter members. He served in many capacities over the years, including Adult Sunday school teacher, deacon, chairman of the board, Sunday school superintendent and door greeter for many years. He had a passion for serving the Lord and seeing people come to know his Savior.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Betty (Pearrell) Jessup; his children, Judi Zolman, Carol Szerlip, Dick Jessup, Jr., Cherie (Kevin) Moore; Robin (Robert) Bolds; and Michael (Dawn) Jessup; sixteen grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; four sisters, Jean DeGroat of Texas, Betty Barringer of Texas; Nancy (Harry) Chandler of Nevada; Thelma (Vern) Parker of Mount Vernon; two brothers, Don Jessup of Texas and David (Mary Ann) Jessup of New York.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by one sister; Genevieve Kruegar of San Fransico and a son-in-law, Jeffrey Zolman of Mt. Vernon.

Funeral Services will be Friday, March 26th, at 11:00 a.m. at Faith Baptist Church, 8764 Martinsburg Rd., Mount Vernon with the Rev. Robert Bolds officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council. Calling hours will be Thursday, March 25th from 5:00PM to 8:00PM at the church.
