Richard S. “Dick” Smith, 83, of Mount Gilead, died on Wednesday December 2, 2009 at the Morrow County Hospital Extended Care Facility.
He was born on September 3, 1926 in Mount Gilead the son of the late Great M. and Alta (Garverick) Smith.
A graduate of Johnsville High school in the class of 1944, Richard was a lifetime member of Morrow County where he was a grain and livestock farmer and a sales representative for Pioneer Seed.
Like so many that have gone on before him, Dick served his country proudly as a member of the United States Army during World War II with the 242nd Port Company. Private 1st Class Smith received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, the Army Occupation Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.
On May 14, 1949 he married Doris Irene Rinehart at the Johnsville parsonage in a service officiated by Rev. Cecil Nichols. They spent 60 wonderful years together before her passing on June 29, 2009. They are now reunited in their heavenly home.
His commitment to his community did not end with farming. He was a Congress Township trustee for 22 years, held memberships in the Morrow County Farm Bureau where he was a council member, and Gideon’s. He was also an avid supporter of the Morrow County Fair.
A life time member of the Williamsport United Methodist Church, Dick was active in Men’s Group, served as a trustee, and was a past Sunday School Superintendent.
In his days of good health, Richard would never miss a Saturday Farm Sale. He would look for miscellaneous farm machinery for his own personal use or equipment he could fix up and resell.
He grew up showing and working Belgium Horses in his early years. He continued going to draft horse shows and sales.
Richard and his family raised and showed registered sheep at many county fairs and The Ohio State Fair.
He was also a member of the Ohio Pork Producers and Ohio Sheep Improvement Association.
Richard will be missed by his four children Roger (Deb) Smith of Mount Gilead, Pam Geckley of Cardington, Carlyle (Sara) Smith of Mount Gilead, Michelle (Matt) Slusher of Mount Gilead; 5 grandchildren Matt, Amber, Allison, Emily (Mike) Smith, and Katie Slusher; and his sister Mary (Ralph) Mosher of Fulton.
In addition to his wife Doris, he was preceded in death by his brother Weldon Smith; sister June Shinaberry and her husband Doc; and his son-in-law Fred Geckley.
Friends may call on the family on Friday December 4, 2009 from 6-8 p.m. at the Snyder Funeral Home, 76 South Main Street, Mount Gilead. Pastor Ray Linn will conduct funeral service there on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Friends may also call from 1:30 p.m. until the time of the service. Burial with full military honors conducted by the V.F.W. Post #8054 and AmVets Post #87 will follow in Shauck Cemetery.
