December 15, 1919 ‒ June 03, 2008
MANSFIELD: Richard P. “Rick” Talmage, 88, of Cline Avenue, Mansfield, died Tuesday evening June 3, 2008 in MedCentral Mansfield Hospital following a short illness.
He was born December 15, 1919 in Chicago, Illinois to Henry P. and Ruth (Payne) Talmage, and was raised in Mount Gilead. He was graduated from Mount Gilead High School in 1938, where he was named all state for football, and first team all district for basketball. He later attended Kenyon College.
A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, Rick served as a signalman in the Pacific theater aboard the USS Otsego, USS Columbia, USS Carl Schurz, USS Frank G. Drum, USS Teapa and USS Cordova. These naval vessels ranged from destroyers and cruisers to Bogue class escort carriers and aviation fuel tankers.
Rick owned and operated Talmage Gulf Distribution of Mansfield.
He was a lifelong member of BPOE #1898, Pompano Beach, Florida; Robert P. Spreng Post # 26 AMVETS, Mansfield; Mansfield Liederkranz; OUR Club; and remained an avid golfer.
Blessed with a great sense of humor, Rick had the kind of personality that put you at ease on your first contact with him. He never met a stranger, and would do anything for anyone. He valued people and their efforts, and often sought to recognize them with a special gift or box of chocolates.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Ann & Keith Addleman of Hillsdale, Michigan; stepson and his wife George and Patricia Swank of Hilton Head, South Carolina; grandchildren and spouses Heather & Jeff Dever, Kristen & Chad Alley; step grandchildren Cary & Cathy Addleman, Caren & Hani Ismail, Steve Swank and Mitch Swank; ten great grandchildren; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law Denny & Margaret Schroeder of Mansfield; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Ila M. Thornton Talmage on December 4, 1965, and by his second wife Leona M. Swank Talmage on May 9, 2004.
The Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home (Former Finefrock Funeral Home) is honored to serve the Talmage Family. A graveside funeral service will be held Monday, July 21, 2008 at 1 pm in Mansfield Cemetery.
