Richard M. “Rick” Paykoff

November 20, 1964 ‒ July 09, 2017

Lewis Center, Ohio

Richard M. “Rick” Paykoff, age 52 died Sunday, July 9, 2017 at Riverside Methodist Hospital following complications from a cerebral blood clot.

The youngest of five children, he was born on November 20, 1964 in Delaware to the late George T. and Iris M. (Spencer) Paykoff. Rick was a 1983 graduate of Olentangy High School, where he also played football and later graduated from Ohio University with a degree in business management.

Living a determined and hard working life, he was a lifelong associate of 35 years with John Howald and Simero Roofing Systems, Inc..  Rick served as general manager and was very proud of their project foremans, dedicated crews, and large completed commercial projects.   Rick always had a project in the works; it was described that he could keep an old piece of equipment working for years. He could fix anything. He treasured time tinkering in his shop. Always neighborly, he assisted with plowing snow, or tilling gardens, that’s just the way he was. He also enjoyed working on the family farm.

Rick shared in the care for the Peachblow United Methodist Church. He was an avid fan of the Ohio State Buckeye’s and NASCAR. Rick was also a member of the Rush Motorsports pit crew as well as many of his brother’s adventuresome motorsports teams.

Known for researching every aspect of a project or concern, he was a collector of everything and a consummate shopper for the best deal. Loyal, kind, and dependable, he was never one to say no when help was needed. Rick participated in many things and was always generous with both this time and talents. His favorite place was home on the family farm or in his shop where he was currently restoring his grandfather’s Ford 8N tractor.  He enjoyed an ornery sense of humor and will be remembered for his helpful and caring ways.

Rick was a fantastic brother and uncle to his family and siblings who will forever cherish his memory. They include siblings: Chris A. (DeeDee) Paykoff of Lewis Center, Georgianna “Georgie” Paykoff of Columbus, Daniel T. (Kim) Paykoff, Patrick D. (Debbie) Paykoff all of Lewis Center, treasured nieces and nephews: Heather, Christopher, Nathan, Melissa, Austan, Connor, Sheridan, 6 great-nieces and nephews, girlfriend Sherry Melvin and her children Luke and Kaleb, Zeke his cat, and numerous friends, neighbors, and work associates.

Friends may call from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Friday at the Grace Point Community Church, 2393 Peachblow Road, Lewis Center, Ohio 43035 where services celebrating his life will be held 10:30 am Saturday with Pastor’s Tom Keene and Terry Lewis officiating. Burial will follow in Cheshire Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Snyder-Rodman Funeral Center in Delaware.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Peachblow United Methodist Church, a place dear to Rick’s heart.

  • So sad to hear this. I went to High Scoll with Rick. We came from what was a small high school at that point so there was a small contingent of us that went onto Ohio University. Rick was one of the “nice guys”! He was always ready to help in any way with whatever he could do to help! He will be greatly missed I’m sure. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family!

  • I was fortunate enough to know Rick for the few short years my family lived “up the road and around the corner” from the Paykoffs. The fun times Rick and my brother and I had during that short time will be remembered and cherished. He was a good friend who will never be forgotten.
Prayers of peace to the Paykoff family.

  • To Sherry Melvin, I’m so very sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you, your boys and Rick’s family.

  • What a shock! Rick had been my go to guy for tough roofing issues for the last 15 years. We shared interests and jokes about racing, The show Gold Rush, tractors, big block chevies and bad jokes. I am so sorry for your loss and the world will now be a bit dimmer and a little less fun without Rick.

  • So very sorry to hear of Rick’s passing. I went to high school with him and my parents were very close to his mom through family and were members of Peachblow. Always liked and respected him. My condolences to the all of the family. Wish I were on Ohio to go to the funeral. God speed, Rick.

  • Me and my wife met Rick shortly after we had gotten together ourselves. All I knew of him was “the guy dating my sister. ” As we got to know him better, the more he grew on us. He quickly became a treasured member of our family. His sense of humor was different than ours, but came to enjoy immensely. He always supported my sister and her boys, doing fatherly things for them, without hesitation it seemed. He often gave me advice on many different subjects, from cars to how to build a carport. He was a part of our lives but for a few short years, but will forever be missed. I personally will always have a small sad place in my heart and soul, and will mourn for him and my sister, for he was her soul mate. They say that only the good die young, and I truly believe that. Again as said earlier, the earth will be a little darker without him, but heaven will be much brigher with him there. Fly high brother, you’ve earned your wings.
