Richard M. “Dick” Higgins

July 11, 1944 ‒ September 17, 2009

Mount Gilead, Ohio

Some men move through life with no particular purpose or plan. Richard M. “Dick” Higgins understood his purpose and took great pride in his role as a husband and father. He died unexpectedly on Thursday September 17, 2009 at his home; loyal until the end. He was 65

He was born on July 11, 1944 in Morrow County the son of the late Walter Earl Higgins Sr. and E. Dorean (Williams) Higgins-Kidwell.

A lifelong Morrow County resident, Dick graduated from Mount Gilead High School in the class of 1964.

Nearly a year after graduation he married Rebecca J. “Becky” Ruth in West Virginia on August 14, 1965. They just celebrated 44 wonderful years together as husband and wife and mother and father.

He worked as a welder for the H.P.M. Corporation for 28 years before a heart attack forced him to retire in 2000. Prior to his work as a welder he worked for the Mount Gilead Water Company as a plumber and meter reader for 18 years.

He was a member of the VFW Post #8054, the AmVets Post #87, and the Galion Moose Lodge #177.

Dick was a true animal lover, especially his Rottweiler, Sam and his cat, Woodie.

Before the onset of his health issues Dick loved getting out on the open rode and riding his Honda motorcycle.

Dick’s most important hobby was the time spent with his son. They were a great team and whatever Dickie’s newest idea or adventure might be Dick was happy to go along for the ride. Dick was a father in the truest sense of the word and there will be a void left with those who loved him.

He will be missed by his wife Becky and their son Richard L and wife Julie of Mount Gilead; his sister Darlene Baer of Leesburg, Florida; his sister-in-law Mary Higgins of Arizona; half sisters Margie (Lowell) Chilcote, Mary Vipperman, and Janet Smith; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he was precede in death by his step-father Albert Kidwell; his brother Walter Earl Higgins Jr.; and his brother-in-law Carl Baer.

Friends may call on the family on Sunday September 20, 2009 from 2-5 p.m. at the Snyder Funeral Home, 76 South Main Street, Mount Gilead. Funeral services will be held there on Monday at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Gene Lilly officiating. Burial will follow at Rivercliff Cemetery.
