Richard E. Maidens, 73, of Galion, died Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009 at home after a short illness.

Born Aug. 18, 1936 in Galion, he was the son of the late J. Robert Maidens and M. Louise Rinehart Maidens. He married Carole A. Derfler Maidens on May 12, 1957 and she survives.

Richard was a graduate of Iberia High School in 1954 and served during the Korean War with the U.S. Army. He played the saxophone and sang for many years with the Dave Rose Orchestra around Ohio, played baseball and softball in Galion and Iberia and was an avid Ohio State University Football, Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Indians fan. He also enjoyed fishing and playing golf. He worked for the Jewel Tea Company for 12 years and later for Schwan’s Sales in the Tony’s Pizza division retiring in 2000.

He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Eric Case of Toronto, Ohio; one son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Kathy Maidens of Tolono, Ill.; four grandchildren, Jennifer Veil, Rachel Veil, Meghan Maidens and Mark Maidens, Jr.; two step-grandchildren, Greg and Todd Case; two great grandchildren, Bob Phelps and Lucas Morrison; one step great grandson, Nicholas Case and one brother and sister-in-law, Dale and Roberta Maidens of Syracuse, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by one brother, John J. “Jackie” Maidens.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009 at Richardson-Davis Funeral Home where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25, with Rev. Pat Fruth officiating. Burial will follow at Iberia Cemetery with full military graveside services held by the Galion /Crestline area veteran’s organizations along with the U.S. Army.
