Richard D. Severance Sr., age 77 of Centerburg passed away early Thursday morning, June 30, 2011 at St. Ann’s Hospital in Westerville.

He was born on Oct. 27, 1933 in Columbus to the late Theodore and Thresa (Black) Severance and attended the Boys Trade School in Columbus. Dick worked as a maintenance mechanic and machinist for Nestles’ in Sunbury, he also worked as a mechanic for friends. He attended the Sunbury Church of the Nazarene and for over 30 years was a dedicated member of the Hartford Fire Dept. He was happiest outside in his garden or tending to his yard. Known for his sweet corn, he took great pride in the produce of his garden, always sharing the bounties of his labor.

Hard working, he enjoyed a stubborn trait and at times was generous to a fault. He enjoyed a sense of humor, hunting, and playing cards with his fellow firemen. Always dependable, he was a wonderful provider, and loving in his own quiet way. Dick will be remembered for giving freely of his time and devoted service to his neighbors and community.

Survived by his loving family: Rebecca (Bruce) Barkhurst of Oak Hill, OH, Leigh Anne (Paul) Manter of Howard, Rick (Theresa) Severance of Centerburg, Terri (Jamie) Shipley of Mt. Vernon; 10 Grandchildren Ryan and Jeremiah Manter, John and Elizabeth Barkhurst, Nick, Mikayla, Trey, Tyler Severance, Tara Severance and Bailee Shipley; Great-grandchildren: Gaven and Elia Manter, Cheyenne Severance, Brothers: Ronnie (Suzanne) of Galena, Duane Severance of Worthington, Billy (Delores ) Williams of Jackson, and a host of extended family and treasured friends.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 48 years: Dixie (Mann) who died in 2003 and brothers: Thomas and Don.

Friends may call Tuesday 4-8 p.m. at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, SR 3 at 61, Sunbury, where funeral services will be held Wednesday 10:30 a.m., Pastors Dan Burris and Mike Bean officiating, interment Trenton Cemetery.
