Mount Gilead, Ohio

Richard “Dick” Martin Jr., age 85, of Mount Gilead, died early on Monday morning, September 25, 2006, at Woodside Village Care Center.

He was born in Petersburg, West Virginia, on January 17, 1921, the son of the late Ida M. (Brockwell) and Richard Wood Martin Sr.

Dick worked at the “Jersey Knoll” Dairy Farm for Jay, Russell and Dick Jagger, for over 12 years as a milk bottler. For 33 years, Dick worked for Morrow Sanitary helping with the trash pick-up chores, retiring in 1990 after an accident where a dumpster fell and injured his arm. In 1987, Mount Gilead Kiwanis honored Dick and two of his co-workers for their 30 years of service to the community.

Following his retirement, most of his time was spent on a park bench on the square, at the Seniors on Center where he enjoyed meals and fellowship, or greeting people at the Woodside Village Care Center. Dick was very fond of the community and people he served. Also, in his younger days he enjoyed going fishing.

Dick is survived by his loving friend Sue Criswell of Galion, and many friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Joseph Martin, and special friends Bill Ghent, Charlie Phelps and Don Rice.

Graveside services will be held on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at Rivercliff Cemetery with Pastor Eric Schroeter officiating.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Craven & Snyder Funeral Home, Mount Gilead.
