Richard D. Johnston
April 10, 1939 ‒ November 24, 2011
Richard D. Johnston, 72, of Galion died unexpectedly after a sudden illness Thursday, Nov. 24, 2011 at Galion Community Hospital.
Born Apr. 10, 1939 in Crestline, he was the son of the late Richard V. and June Hoffman Johnston. He married Pat Coats Johnston on Oct. 21, 1961 and she survives.
Dick was a graduate of Galion High School in 1958 and a member of First Lutheran Church in Galion. He worked at Gorman-Rupp for 35 years where he was a welder and a receiving inspector retiring in 2002. Most recently he enjoyed his part-time job greeting people at Sam’s Club where he teased, joked and kindly “harassed” his friends and patrons. His family was his first love and concern, spending as much time as he could with his grandchildren. Dick was an avid outdoorsman and runner; he hunted for many years and enjoyed fishing and playing golf. A likeable person, Dick had many Facebook friends and posted daily jokes. He was a man of great faith and read daily devotional books.
In addition to his wife he is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Tracie and Bob Wittibslager of Galion and Kelly Bowen of Delaware; one son, Joe Johnston of Galion; six grandchildren, Miranda Gabe Monk, Abbie Chad Phelps, Megan Wittibslager, Skylar Henwood, Alex Johnston and Haley Phelps; two great-grandchildren, Adyson and Seth Monk and one sister, Linda Jim Brocklesby of Galion.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Betty and his parents.
