Richard D. “Don” Carter, age 84, of Mount Gilead, passed away Friday morning, September 2, 2016, at the Morrow County Hospital.
On May 8, 1932, Don was born at home on the family farm five miles north of Mt. Gilead where he lived his life. He was the son of the late Vernon H. and Edith M. (Lloyd) Carter. He attended Iberia Schools while growing up.
On November 16, 1952, Don married Carolyn Jean Hammond, at the Mount Gilead Church of the Nazarene. They shared 63 years together.
When God created Don, He made a farmer. Don farmed beef cattle and grain crops most of his life. He loved his dogs and cats and all animals were individually named. He was also employed by Komatsu Dresser in Galion for 39 ½ years until his retirement.
A couple of faith, Don and Carolyn were first members of the Mt. Gilead Church of the Nazarene and later transferred their membership to the Galion Church of the Nazarene.
When Don wasn’t busy working, he loved going to tractor pulls. He especially enjoyed attending the NTPA in Bowling Green, Ohio. He was also a devoted family man and loved spending time with them. All of his grandchildren held a special place in his heart.
Don will be dearly missed by his wife, Carolyn, of Mt. Gilead; two daughters: Barb Carmella of Hamilton, OH, Ruthy (Ron) Brown of Cardington; a son, Don Carter of Mt. Gilead; six grandchildren: Rodney (Candice) Brown, Jodi Brown, Shelby Brown, Kasey Brown, Bradley (Sarah) Carmella, Colton Carter; and two great grandchildren: Rolly Brown and Robby Carmella.
In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his sister, Juanita Workman.
Don’s family will greet friends from 11:00 a.m. – 12 Noon on Wednesday, September 7, 2016, at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mt. Gilead. Services to honor and celebrate his life will be held there at 12 Noon with Pastor T.J. McNew officiating. Burial will follow in Iberia Cemetery.
